Valvoline Max Life FTW.

When I got my 4Runner, the trans fluid was literally black.

I did a drain and fill, dropped the pan, and changed the strainer right away. Magnets were pretty dirty, original strainer had some gunk in it.

I did 4 drain and fills from then on out (one drain and fill at every oil change)

The Trans fluid got more ruby red-like in color every time. Eventually by the last drain and fill, the fluid was beautiful.

No trans problems to report.

Amazing grammer on the back of that bottle.

I thought I could only expect impeccable grammar from certain overseas retailers (not knocking anyone).

Still we understand it yet have to wonder about the writer's first language!

Notice the first two sentences of the 3rd paragraph, where it talks about the new Toyota WS transmission fluid.

Luck and enjoy those Toyota products. : ^ )))

Yeah I noticed that as well seems like English is not his mother tongue. I drain my atf pan with every oil change at around 7k miles so I go through it a lot. Just bit the bullet and bought it but haven't used it yet. The Trans is running strong with t-iv and have had no issues hence i thought i hit the jackpot. The conundrum is the worry, "Just when I think I am out they pull me back in".

I am sorry for the TB news @spartacus . I didn't mean to cause you anymore work.

Almost like 95% of all Toyota transmissions are T4 compatible. Except our 3rd gen 4runners are not. I really wanted them documented for all the users. So if someone reading the thread they will know that it's not Recommend for the 3rd gens.

FWIW I did a total fluid replacement following Timmy's tutorial on Youtube a couple months ago, and installed my B&M 70268 cooler at the same time.

I went to my local dealership to get my ATF and they gave me 14 quarts of Mobil1 synthetic that said it was made for Ford and Chevy trucks or something on the front. The guy at the parts counter said that's what their distributor has been giving them and that it's fine, I think it was Dexron III.

So far no issues.

Well this has been informative for me, last August I did a full exchange on my '99 using the T-IV because it said on the bottle that it was a direct replacement for the T-III. So now I have to pump out $100 worth of the wrong fluid and use after market fluid ??

FWIW, I haven't had any issues with the trans since I did the exchange. If anything, it definitely shifts better.

That's up to you. You are correct as it does state that on the bottle. If you not experiencing any problems with the fluid that's great. Just keep it in mind the next exchange or time to change it. It probably be better to use another fluid. As there are documented cases that our transmission can slip and not function properly with TIV fluid.

Mostly the TB come out after issues start happening.

Thankfully, we have many of other fluids that are Dexron III and II compatible to choose from.

You're fine. Been using this spec for a while. I trust it more than an unlicensed Dexron. Plus all the major synthetic fluids allow cross compatibility between Dexron 3 and T-IV, even the beloved Maxlife ATF. Haven't ever heard of a failure by using T-IV.

Speaking of Maxlife, it has specs similar to Toyota WS in order to meet WS spec. Why not just try straight WS in these transmissions? I've already heard success stories of Dexron 6 in these, which is another low viscosity ATF similar to WS.

As long as you don’t have torque converter shudder and it shifts fine your probably ok.
Who’s to say if it would have a negative impact on the torque converter and clutch packs.
