This. I often search the forum for things that aren't even 4Runner specific (recently, snatch straps and fire extinguishers) because I trust the people on here.

I'm often on Jeep forums and youtube trying to sort out problems with the XJ, and the difference between that and this place is huge. I've actually thought of posting some of my Jeep problems on here because I'd probably get more coherent and helpful answers than I get on NAXJA.org

Total cost of vehicle ownership....

Like many of you, I keep my vehicles for a very LONG time and do as much of the work as possible myself. I have never totaled up these costs but it is very interesting....

I tend to think about the larger repairs as mentioned above - that should last for several years - as an investment. Those $250 LBJ's should go 100 K Miles. Then that money seems less significant.

Right now I am doing mostly maintenance to my 1998 SR5. My wife has gifted me some nice items: Bluetooth CD stereo, CB radio, LED light bar, Vent Visors, floor mats, etc. I also installed a subwoofer.

I personally enjoy driving an older vehicle and not paying BIG Payments.
You also have to take into consideration the TAXES you pay. That varies by state BUT last year in KY, I paid ZERO taxes for the first time ever.

WOO HOO!

There is definitely a time when it costs TOO MUCH to keep repairing an OLD CAR as a daily driver.......BUT I can't afford a NEW 4 Runner.......

AND, I really appreciate all the great information, help, tips, etc on this Awesome Forum. Y'all are a Great Bunch!!!

Y'all enjoy your Runners!

I included modifications because that's part of what I wanted from my ownership experience. I bought the truck to build something that could do hard wheeling and I had a blast doing it.

Trying to do everything the cheapest way is another conversation.

I've been told I can have it 'good', 'fast', and 'cheap' but I can only have two of those things in a car, bike, or boat. Probably true for women too but like you said; that's another conversation.

Very interesting seeing how much a vehicle like our 4Runners can cost over a certain period of time. Hopefully gas doesnt go up, because my MPG is going down some.

that's fine but you can't compare that to the cost of your wife's Subaru then nor is it an accurate representation of the cost of ownership.

I'm glad you had fun with it though.
