Rearview Mirror Camera Display

I've seen a lot of people on here install a backup camera and then put the monitor on the dash or have a stereo with the monitor built in. What I'm thinking of doing is put the monitor in the rear view mirror. They make some that clip onto the existing rear view mirror (Car Rear View w/4.3" TFT | eBay), but I want to make it look more OEM.

Are the 4Runner rearview mirrors a standard size?

I'm thinking about hacking up a junkyard mirror and seeing if I can gut the ebay one and install it in there. One unique thing about the 4runner mirror that I'm sure everyone is aware of is that it is not attached to the windshield. I've considered getting one that does this, but would rather have it attached to the map/dome light module.

Anyone have any advice/experience with this type of setup?

My mirror is attached to the windshield. What year is your 4Runner? I know they changed the map lights at some point. Mine is an 01. I would just replace the entire mirror with a new mirror with the built in screen if I were you rather than trying to cut up an old one and get a screen in it. The late model Tacomas have the back up camera like this and it is a really neat feature.

Mine is a '99 and has it attached to the map/dome light assembly. The problem I'm finding is that they don't have the exact setup of mirror attachment for the type of setup the 99's have. I've thought about having it attached to the windshield, but would rather keep it on the map/dome light module if at all possible. Did those Tacoma's have it attached to the windshield or the same setup as mine? I'm going to do some searching on that.

Actually it's held on by a couple of screws underneath the console. I added a auto dimming mirror and just got a kit to mount to the windshield. It was a little complicated (i made it that way lol), but worth it IMO.

Did you cover up the whole in the map/dome light console afterwards?

I think the tacomas have it mounted to the windshield. I would think the hole would be at the back of the map light housing and you wouldn't even notice it.

No, the wiring loom/plug for my auto dimming mirror comes out from there. It looks factory. If I didn't tell you any better you probably wouldn't know just by looking at it.

I have CDO, so it would totally bug the hell out of me.

I have one of those mirror mounted ones that clips onto the original mirror and it actually fit okay so I didn't mod it. After I relocated the spare tire I couldn't see very well out the back and it also helps backing up my short trailer too.

This is what it looks like trying to see out the back without the camera.

And with the camera.

I ended up punting and getting a Jensen VX4025 2 din stereo with backup camera capability. With my previous OEM bumper, the trick was finding the right camera that fits in place of one of the OEM license plate lights. If you'd like, I can dig up my dimensions on that and share.

I've got a 4xI rear bumper with swing out tire carrier on there now. Drilled a spot on the bumper for the camera I now have and the wiring goes out through the rear vent on the drivers side. So much easier than having to pull it through the grommet at the top of the tailgate.

Gotcha. For a camera I planned to do one of the ones that attach at the license plate. Still trying to figure out a mirror. The non windshield deal is a challenge.
