I think the 4.56 was only on the 4 cylinder models so I’d be looking at those ones in the junk yards, it’s pretty uncommon

Thanks, that's really helpful. I was going down the list for where to search and came across several of these types of auctions:

https://www.copart.com/lot/52730670/...runner-tx-waco

This shows an axle code of A04A which according to Toyota 4x4 Gears and Differentials - LC Engineering looks to be a 4.56 ratio. I think from what I've been able to tell, taco's didn't receive the upgraded 8.4" rear end until 2009 but of course, I'd have to drive up there and confirm. But this particular one is about 1.5 hours away from me so not terrible.

Anyway, I've been cruising ebay auctions too, hoping for quality enough there...

I have an A04A axle code and mine is a 4.30 geared rear e-locker. I have verified this with a spin test.

I don’t have any experience with 2nd gen tacos, but I would imagine that even if the rear 3rd member is the same as ours the front diff is likely very different and probably won’t swap over so I’d keep looking for a 4runner with that ratio

They are supposed to be the same according to the taco boards, but....

OK, this is interesting. What year is yours? Maybe A04A is only good for 4.56 after MY2000 vehicles?

2000 Limited. I don't think Toyota would redesign their axle code system, but keep the stickers the same template. I'm not the only one with an A04A 4.30 axle either. I would lean more towards bad information or maybe tacoma heavy information.

All good points. That Taco auction is up to $4k+ so that's out anyway. There's a 99 4runner auction ending tomorrow that I'll watch to see where the price goes. It has A03A axle code so it should at least match my 4.1 ratio. And I'm still cruising ebay for something interesting as well... Thanks for the info!

Interesting, so I decided to do some digging online with toyota to check compatibility. The case itself looks to be compatible with just 4runners and FJ cruisers up through 2009:

1991-2009 Toyota Carrier Case 41101-35170 | Discount Toy

But then I checked the locking case and it's compatible up through 2015 tacoma's :

1996-2015 Toyota Carrier Case 41101-35151 | Discount Toy

then I checked the side gears to compare axle diameter and spline count and there is a missing section for 2001-2008 4runners but does show compatibility for 2007-2009 FJ cruisers:

1993-2019 Toyota Side Gear 41039-34060 | Discount Toy

So it really looks to be a grab-bag and nothing is for certain which is really annoying.

So, yea, finding 4.56 gears is definitely proving difficult. I have a line on a set of 4.30 diffs with rear e-locker whole axle that I may try to swap in and see how that works out. In theory, it should all work without me doing any housing modification to my existing housing nor without paying labor to re-gear the front to match. And I'll end up with some spare cores to send out to ECGS once I'm ready to upgrade gearing...

Finally got a little delivery this week, planning on swapping these in over the weekend and then going for a test drive...

And it's all done and installed. Damn that front diff was a giant PITA! But got it in finally with enough wiggling. Also installed a shiny new skid plate for the locker along with the harness from low range off road. I'm not super impressed with how the switch fits but I guess I can epoxy it in place if it needs. Now to test it all on the trails....

Forgot to add that I went ahead and got the ECGS bushing upgrade and replaced all the seals of course. I didn't like the tool supplied that is shown in the videos to remove the needle bearing and instead used a slide hammer to remove the old bearing. It was stupid simple and no need to shove a part into the diff and prevent things from getting into the diff or worse, breaking the needle bearing apart and having the rollers drop in. Highly recommended.
