Key won't come out. Shift interlock constantly engaged....

I'm so frustrated with this I'm about to burn the truck down.

I've got a 98 4runner limited.
One night, the key won't come out. 30 minutes of fuvking around and it finally came out. great. the next day I try to sort it out after work. no luck. Got at it again this weekend....

So far, I have cleaned all the connectors I can find. The "sensor" located at the bottom of the shifter which tells the shift interlock ecu that the shifter is in "Park" has been cleaned and confirmed functioning as it should. The solenoid has been cleaned and lubricated. The physical part which the key goes into has been cleaned and confirmed to be functioning as it should.
I know that the solenoid at the ignition is getting 12v from both the pink and the blue wire, and that the blue wire is what's keeping the solenoid engaged thus keeping me from turning the key to off position. I opened the shift interlock ecu and found no loose soldering although it is a little browned

What's next? New ecu? I'd like to fix this properly.....

I had a similar problem. I just unplugged the shift interlock ecu (never heard it called that before) and it works fine.

Also your shift lever on the tranny might need to be adjusted. If it's not actually going into park fully it won't release your key

Did you try this?
Key stuck in ignition, Computer Shift Lock Control help!
This worked for mine, then I replaced the bushings to stop the slop in the shifter. All like new now.

Just an update.

I installed a switch so I can pull the key out, but then that stopped giving me problems and instead I have to push the shift lock over-ride to pull out of park. So I dig into it again, more testing of the system, and concluded that everything is functional and that a resistor in the shift lock module must have failed.

I finally got a module from a junk yard last week and everything is working perfectly so far!

Hello all. New member here. I have a 1996 4Runner, SR5. I've narrowed my key lock issue to the Key Interlock Solenoid. I have the replacement. My question is how to I remove the 2 blue wires from the white connector? I don't want to simply yank them out for fear of leaving the metal pin inside the white plastic connector.

Any help would be appreciated.

A photo of the connector may help you get an answer. Off the top of my head I cant Invision what those connectors look like.

The first picture shows the 2 wires. The second picture shows the connector where the 2 wires go into. Later I can get a better picture of the inside of the connector. It may help.

I'm sure there is some sort of release mechanism on the connector. But as it's plastic, I don't want to risk breaking it and having to buy the whole ignition module system. That connector shares 2 other wires that hook up to something else.

Here's the actual inside of the connector and the outside.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Just checking to see if anyone has an idea on how to pull out the wired pins from the white connectors?

Thanks in advance.

I am not sure but @sleepydad in his 97 4runner build had to deal with the ignition module. hopefully he sees this mention and helps you out.

I guess I spoke to soon. I've lifted the "gate" on the connector. But I still can't pull out the 2 blue wires. I know there must be a clip in there, to release the wires, but for the life of me, I can see it. Any ideas?

Well, I removed the wires from the connector and install the new Shift Key Lock interlock Solenoid. But low and behold, my key still gets stuck! Everything pointed to that part. When the key is stuck, and I remove Shift Key Interlock Solenoid from the ignition assembly, the key would become unstuck.

What else could cause the key to be stuck?

Thanks all!

Try some graphite on your key and lube the tumblers. May have a sticking tumbler.
