I’m a little confused on the GM Alt reliability. Like (I Think) DOC said, his Alt mod has lasted years. I’ve never had a 1 wire GM Alt fail before the 200K mile mark. A few members get junk rebuilds and the CS 144 is now junk? It’s no different than a reman Junk Denso Alt rebuild.
I would hate to think that he thinks he is a product of bad info and every time he sees a thread on the upgrade and how it took a crap 3 months later he feels guilty.............
Reman shops in bulk only replace what is bad. It only gets new brushes if that was what the failure was. Or the rectifier, or the regulator......
I personally have no problem going junking for a CS144 Alt and replacing the brushes and seeing how long it lasts. Especially if it will push 80a at idle. I’ve had two CS alt’s last 200k miles with no issues. Plus an older SI that lasted over 160k miles, and it’s still working as far as I can tell. The old CJ7 is no longer mine.
I’ll admit that the Denso is slightly easier to rebuild. Mostly because the GM requires soldering and the Denso is screws.
I really hope the CS144 bashing isn’t just regurgitating a few bad units and now all have become junk.
Just for the record, all you all buying a reman Alt for your Toy and having it fail....it’s not a new alternator with ZERO parts available. Figure out if it’s the 70a or the 80a and buy the parts from Toyota to fix it. (And that’s all but as simple as looking at the brush assembly and you know what output you have).
Turning in your factory Alt as a core did not screw you for life. Just fix your reman Denso Alt by yourself and move on.
