I have drum brakes on 2 of my vehicles............. I do the tire rotations and check all the brakes/pads/shoes ..if the drum has a ridge I grind that ridge down so the drum slides off .. also anti seize on the axle where the drum sets..
your problem is the shoes had most likely a spring failure causing the shoe to create high heat then the axle seal got cooked ..
