Junker Runner - worth it?

My friend text me today to let me know she’s thinking about junking her ‘00 and she asked me if I wanted anything off of it. I do.

It’s a 2000 4wd 236k miles and apparently has some rust issues underneath. A part of me hates to let this go for parts. I know you can’t know without seeing pics (I don’t have any yet) but if you’re in this situation what do you do?

Take what I want off it? Save it and see what I can do with it? I’m guessing I can get it for $500-$1000.

Snap it up cheap as you can and get it in your own driveway and go from there.

It only takes a handful of good parts to make it worth $500, and you only have to sell a handful of parts to recoup your money.

Engines alone tend to fetch $1000... you can pick and sell the big items pretty quick/easy and scrap the rest a couple weeks later if you've no room for storage. Not too difficult way to horde things you want, make a few bucks and get to do a lttle wrenching (if you're into that kind of thing).

Who knows, the "rust issues" may not be that bad and if you're interested in welding projects, it could be something to work on.

Scrap value is less than $200, If it's a running driving junk that really can't be put back on the road, but has many good parts $3-$600. In mostly good working order with a rust or other large issue that can be repaired and put back on the road $500-$1000 tops

This really depends on your area. As rot issues place them at junk value. Whole complete 4 runners in my area are 500 to 1k max. Also major issues like transmission out , major frame damage takes the vehicles down to scrap value as well because the cost of repairs exceed the value of the vehicles. So a plus 1 with all the other contributors comments.

Down here in SW FL these rigs get stripped pretty quick at the you pull junk yards. The entire engine compartment and dash trim pieces would be bare on day one.

Same here. A decent 2000 with a clean interior and a running engine I could sell for around $3,000+ from parts alone. Of course, that's not factoring in the time it takes to pull the parts, take photos, list online, etc. etc. But I did part out a specific 4Runner with the sole purpose of spares for my current 4Runner plus extra money for go-fast parts. Was worth it.

This is exactly what I'm trying to decide. Right now I'm leaning toward getting it home and seeing if I can resurrect it- either as a project for me and my son (who will be driving in a year) or to flip.

If it's beyond that point I can part it out and keep what I want.

You be surprised what can be repaired. As I saved 5 from the junkyard. As 4 had major frame issues. Anyone can fix them if they want to. Just lots of folks dont want to spend the time or some $$ on them.

Honestly you can probably buy it for let's say 750 in the middle and pay someone 500 bucks to properly patch the frame. It's probably a typical rust by the upper control arm mount in the rear.

BUY IT! Doing rust repair isn't that bad. Doing it right is a bit more difficult. But for $500 it's worth it.

I'm about to start on mine anytime so feel free to ask question, and I'll post pictures in my thread. The repairs are going to consist of frame sections, cross member mounts, LCA mounts, rockers, and some of the passenger quarter panel.

That's exactly the problem.

Junk yards are offering them $500 so it looks like that's where we're at.

Decisions. Decisions.

You guys are terrible for my garage space.

Offer $500 and let them know it's going to a very good place with lots of people who'll take good care of the parts and it will be appropriately parted.
