Timing Belt "Triage"
Hello, all.
I hope the dead of winter finds everyone well.
I am planning some spring-time maintenance and first on the list is the timing belt and water pump.
My question is (as the title implies), what are the most important "others" to replace while getting the timing belt replaced? Last time I had the timing belt done (on a different 3rd gen) I bought on of AirCabinMan's kits on EBay. There are quite a few variations out there, both his and others', that use OEM (which is what I plan to do) but I'm trying to decide how much and/or how little I should have replaced. It seems like one could go down the rabbit hole pretty quickly.
For those more in the know than myself, if you were considering this a triage scenario, what would be your order? After timing belt and water pump...idler, pulley, seals, thermostat...?
FYI: I'll be having my trusty mechanic do this.
I'm assuming:
1. Timing Belt
2. Water pump
3. ...

Lots of posts asking the same question on here.
Here's my take:
1. Timing belt, tensioner, water pump, idler/tension pulleys, crank bolt are bare minimum.
2. Front main seal, cam seals, thermostat and V belts are optional but I recommend doing them also while you're at it.

I've only ever bought 1 crank bolt, but haven't used it yet. Just bought it to see what all the fuss was about.
I've never seen a kit include one, including those kits sold by Aircabinman and advertised as being "complete".
For me its:
#1:Belt and water pump, then tensioner, tensioner pulley, and idlers.
#2:Replace any seals that leak, or all of them.
#3:Thermostat, alt, ac, ps belts.
#4: crank bolt.
#1 and #2 items are underneath each other and require removal of the Timing belt to replace. But I've run the crank and cam seals out past 200k with no issues.
#3 and #4 items can be replaced at any time with little trouble.

I too am compiling parts for a TB change. I went for a different Aircabinman kit:
15 Piece 3.4L engine TIMING BELT KIT WATER PUMP Genuine & OE Manufacture Parts! | eBay
To that, I've added:
OEM Crankshaft Bolt - 90119-16006
OEM A/C Idler Pulley - 88440-35060 - Has integral bearing.
Aisin FBT-004 Fan Pulley Bracket. Bracket Assy. contains a captive, non-replaceable bearing:

As for the other spinning components - I'm holding off on the Fan Clutch, Alternator, PS Pump & A/C Compressor pending physical inspection.
While I'm in there, I will also be doing the PS flush / Pump reservoir filter screen cleaning via Tim's DIY as I have a whine upon cold startup:

This is a good list. Personally, I added the water outlet (16331-62040) and water inlet (16321-62020), because why not! Those are totally optional and I did them because they were taken off to do the timing belt and I didn't want to spend the time to get them all cleaned up. Now I have spares!

Depending on the miles,,,there is lots you can do...I also did the a/c tensioner pulley and fan pulley bracket ( listed above) also called a false water pump..as it kind of looks like one. I also did my cam and crank seals and thermostat.
An option for is fan clutch which I already had anyway (already had from a previous miss diagnosed bearing noise) but that is easy to replace at a later time.
also as mentioned in other threads, not knowing age or miles...hoses.... radiator. Mine were relatively new at the time ( less than 20k)
If paying someone to do the work, all those parts have to come off anyway..so why not replace with new if you can afford the parts and should not be an additional charge for labor. Again..depends on the miles.
And use Asian Red antifreeze..or Toyota antifreeze with distilled water

Boy you guys have the opposite understanding of "Triage" than I do.
What's the point of replacing the oil cooler O-ring but not replacing the water lines to and from the oil cooler?
This line of thinking could go on right up till a guy just goes and buys a new truck.

Be prepared to replace the fan bracket as well. I wasn't planning on it when I did my timing belt but noticed it was toast when I took it off my 4runner with 175k miles. The bearing made noise and felt rough when rotated by hand.

Get the timing belt kit from Rock Auto - OEM parts without the Toyota markup. You'll need to buy the thermostat, but otherwise it has all the mandatory components.

Thanks for all the replies!
I think I'll come up with a list of a bunch of stuff, show my mechanic, and see what he has to say about labor. As I said at the beginning, it's certainly a rabbit hole!
