Spare Tire Rim Question

Hello All,

I like my Wildpeaks so much that I decided to update my really old spare tire with one.

I noticed the spare rim is just an old fugly steel rim that does not match the nice, purdy alloy rims. I have 16" rims.

Is that the case for all 3rd gen?

All cars that I remember having a spare tire (that should tell you I drive old cars), the spare rim always matched what was on the car.

Thanks,

Eddie

The spare rim matched the others because they were fugly steel ones too, then you put hub caps on them.

Considering it rides under the vehicle, it's gonna get pretty hacked up unless you take it down and clean it a lot.

Stock spare is steel on 3rd Gens. IIRC, you can fit a stock alloy wheel under there if you want, as long as your tires aren't much larger than stock.

This, they are all steel as far as I know.

I have a 16" early Tundra/late Tacoma wheel under there with a 265/75-16 original BFG K0 (bought used for cheap) to match the diameter of my 265/70-17 K02's. It will never rust, and will fit over Tundra brakes...

I have a 99 LTD with the 5 star rims. My spare is a rusted POS steel as well. I recently got new tires and asked the guy at the shop to put the best old tire on the spare. When I went to pick it up he said he couldn't because it was so rusted that it would take significant work to clean it up for a good seal and not damage tire.

I ended up finding a used 5-star rim online for like 40$ shipped and am using that now. I run 265/75/16 Cooper AT3s

Thanks for everyone's comments.

Yes, I have the 5 star alloy rims and my plan is find a used one for cheap (you have a link drallan?) as $40 is about what it would be worth to me to get rid of the fugly rim.

Thanks again all,

Eddie

P.S. I looked on fleabay and it looks promising drallan. If drallan has a link, it still might be helpful.

Craigslist and similar is also a good option. Since it is under the truck, it doesn't have to match exactly - just fit.

I got new ATPs last summer and like an idiot I completely forgot to keep one of them for the spare. Unsurprisingly, no one is selling single ATPs in decent condition on CL. Maybe in 5 years, when the current set are near done, I'll have another chance to rectify that mistake.

I prefer the steel spare tire rims for the reason I can flip them over and have the valve stem facing down. This makes it so much easier to not only check the tire pressure but add air to it.

The aluminum stock rims dont seem to flip as easy as the steel ones can. Granted, the steel rims need sand blasted and expoxy painted every once in a while and if they get too bad they will need replaced.

So its probably more of what's best for the owner of the rig. ;)

Being tire pressure sensors systems can be easily added now one could always monitor the pressure of the spare tire as well.

Another weird thing: the steel spare rim on my '97 is lug-centric, and requires tapered lugnuts...not the flat-ended lugnuts that my original alloy rims require. Acquiring a 5th alloy rim is on the to-do list.

Yes but it's a spare tire. You supposed to only run it for a little bit. I guess you could buy different lugs nuts to use. However, I haven't had the lugs come loose in a week or so. So they seem to stay tight.
