I will inspect the filter again. I did not see it dripping the two times I watched it but it had had oil around it. It is tight, tighter than I normally tighten them since I snugged it twice since yesterday. I threw away the old filter so I can't verify if it is a double gasket issue until I remove it. Seems odd if it was the filter since it is dripping from the steering rack crossmember while parked and the oil filter is further forward but it could be blown back.

I will try to degrease the engine 2nite. I get off at 10pm so hopefully I can do that without everything freezing. It is cold out.

And yes v-6, and yes 5 quarts to get it 1/8" below full line.

Surprised the engine didn't seize up. I have no idea how it ran on .5 quart. Being the skid plates are not there or missing. It sounding like the leaks are coming from above or the oil cooler.

I honestly can see the oil blowing that far back on a block.

That far back is sounding more like valve pans or cam plugs super leaking. :/

if its not any of the above...how about rear main seal

reminds me of something that happened years back to a lady friend. Her brother changed the oil and put all the new oil down the tranny dipstick

Great thought. I always thought the rear mains always leak out the bell housing.

I did put oil down the tranny dipstick......6 months ago and it was transmission oil.

I will report back with what i find but if not then it was too dark and I have to wait till Tuesday when I am off.

Thanks for the tips so far.

very very true....just looking for possibilities....doubt its the rear main seal but sounds like he needs to check everyplace

In my case, hand-tight was always tight enough except for the one time. If I had wiped it down thoroughly first I would never have had the problem. My fault.

do yourself a favor pull the skid plates place them in the back on something to catch the oil bring a creeper, flash light, and go to are car wash that allows engine cleaning (here in California if you use one that is not approved for de-greasing you can be subject to a fine) Bring plenty of change and give your engine compartment and any other place a bath.

Look at it and plan on how your going to do it I start at the bottom back and move forward. Bring eye protection a face shield even better. When you get to the top try not to get to much water in the alternator. Also careful around the radiator and a/c condenser as it will push over the fins. I also try not to hit a hot exhaust manifold as much as possible.

When the whole thing is done let it drip off a bit take a little break and then get back on your creeper and with a flash light see where you missed. Drop some money into car wash and finish the job. Don't for get the skid plates in the back.

This will make life much easier to find these leaks and enjoyable to work on.

You made the same mistake I did on #3 OP states no skid plates..

I was fine until I changed filter types. Then its metal case was more slippery. So I reverted to using a filter wrench. Havent had an issue sense.

My oil is so clear looking after an oil change for the first 2000 miles I need direct sunlight to see the oil level.

It was the filter.

I started it up at work and oil poured out from what looked like right below the filter. I went and bought another filter and the leak stopped.

I believe there was dirt on the filter gasket because I felt some on the mating surface of the block. I cleaned it real good and fished the new filter through from above.

I hope no damage was done running it however long I did with very little oil.

Thanks for all the help.
