Cruise Control messing with my SGI-5 speedo calibrator

So, some how I actually successfully wired in my Dakota digital SGI-5 and was able to calibrate the system so I could pop my new wheels on!

But... I now have an issue where I cannot use cruise control as when I do the speedometer will randomly jump down 5 mph or so causing the engine and transmission to think they need to vrooooom! If I run without cruise control, this never happens.

I grounded the SGI-5 to the frame vs the ABS harness... Was this perhaps a mistake?

Other random electrical things that I've had before this install are:

- Door lock button rarely works, fob works.
- Light around key cylinder now rarely works
- I always get shocked lightly when I exit the truck now. Like static but it's very apparent and always happens.

Any relation? Ideas?

Also...the new wheels!

I have the SGI-5 too. I get the little blips on the speedo - in my case, only when going up or down through 55mph. I have a feeling it is the SGI-5, not any of the wiring.

So, I'd say your other issues are unrelated.

- Door locks - check if the passenger door button works. You may have bad wiring in the driver'd door harness.
- Key cylinder light - that's a odd one - but the only light in the truck controlled by the integration relay (either bad bulb, wiring, or flaky integration relay)
- Its winter, and might just be dry where you are. Before you start getting out of your seat, touch and keep your hand on the door latch loop on the b-pillar as you get out. You'll never get shocked that way. If you can stand the smell, rubbing a dryer sheet on the seat cloth will work too.

Charlie - would a throttle cable adjustment affect this cruise behavior? I know my stock setup was less jumpy when I tightened the cable up to spec.

Those Dakota digital kits are quite popular. Fairly easy to wire up. I wired one into a 1969 z 28 for a friend on mine.

Seems like that would only affect how it applies the throttle when you set it or when re-applying throttle after a coasting situation...

You can make it totally smooth with some careful application of the throttle manually though.

I think the only suggestion for the original poster is to avoid those speeds where the SGI-5 has glitches when using cruise control... (and yes, I was disappointed when I saw the glitches on mine - but not enough to search for another solution!)

I only offered as mine would have a lag and over-throttle response before the throttle would catch up with the controller's demand. The lag was minimised with adjustment.

Hey all thanks for the replies.

So it isn't a specific speed, I tried CC at 35/40/45/50/55/60/65/70 and random speeds like 53 and such. the little blip only occurs when cruise control is locked. When I stopped testing it today and turned it off I never saw the blips again. To be clear, the speedometer will rapidly drop what seems to be 3-5 mph and I believe the drivetrain takes this as "going up hill, need more power" so she shifts. This is all in a manner of 2-3 seconds. Like "blip, vroom!".

The reason I was asking about the grounding to the harness is that I wasn't sure if maybe there was some kind of ground loop or something. I know generally you grab everything to other friend, but I did not know if maybe with these trucks if there was some special cases where you don't.

Also, thanks for the replies about the other minor issues, I was just concerned about whether or not I might have some kind of underlying electrical issue that could be affecting everything...

Also, for a anyone with a SGI-5 can you post a photograph of your wiring? Curious if I did it right...haha.

Also, what mode are you guys using? I knew it has like seven or eight modes or something like that. By default it's on mode 1.

This is actually the photo that helped me originally! Haha. You grounded it to the harness correct?

Yeah. I don't expect ground loops to be an issue for this... but who knows?

You are using output 2, right?

Yes output two. I also would think ground loops are an issue on a vehicle...but maybe there is a reason there is a ground cable in the harness. I'll swap it and report back after testing.

Okay so it looks like I am using the incorrect mode. Mode 2 is the default, or HH and apparently we need to use mode 2 which is LL. I will try to switch this during lunch and report back.

Well, it actually is already set up on LL. So at this point if changing the grounding does not fix it, I'm officially out of ideas
