Yes lots of folks use vasoline.

The only drawbacks to it is it swells rubber and is flammable.

All the posters gave excellent advice. I am sure you soon will have your cause.

+1 on the brushes. I first replaced brushes as a preventive measure when my 1988 4Runner was around 200k miles, on the advice of the dealership parts guy. Have done it on 3 vehicles since, and 200k is a good time to do it. May not be advice for your current problem, but something to keep in mind.

Alternator brushes added to the list along with a thorough test of the unit.

Turns out my wiring harness and connections from the battery back has a ton of corrosion in it with the insulation swelled to 2x the normal size, so I'm replacing that, which is not particularly cheap to do as it turns out.

This seems my likely culprit but then maybe not, at any rate it would have been a problem down the road if I didn't get to it now.

A little tip for an alternator failure: Over the past 8 years I've had the battery terminal fail (stalled randomly), the cable corrode (stalled randomly and did occasional goofy things), and the alternator poop out (The first time it happened I thought my poor little Dusty ('99 LTD) was possessed. Engine cutting in and out, ABSL, CEL, speedo bouncing all over the place, lights going on and off). At the time I was doing about 80 on a typical Texas 2-lane in the middle of nowhere. Coasted in to a graveyard, of all places, and quickly found I had no cell reception. Thankfully, remembered a trick from my slew of old Chevys and tapped (not smacked) the alternator with a hammer several times. She fired right up like nothing happened and took me home. Hopefully none of y'all experience that but, if you do...

I would keep the alternator as a part to at least inspect for brush wear, if not outright replacement.
I had the intermittent power fluctuations, ABS light symptoms.
Tightened the battery terminal clamps, replaced battery. It was good for a while, but the symptoms came back. It was a faulty alternator.
Local dealerships said 1 day for delivery of an alt, but I couldn't have the vehicle out of service. Went with an independent shop that could put in a Duralast brand alt the same day.
They had to replace the Duralast 3 times over the course of 3.5 years. After the 2nd time, bought an OEM alternator for the inevitable failure.
I would recommend getting a price quote from either Rockauto for an OEM alternator or one of the Toyota dealerships that does online parts orders and seriously consider buying an alternator in advance.

Some aftermarket brands are better than some. Seems like lately most have gone downhill on reliability in favor of max profits for the re builder.
When time came for my alt replacement, Denso from Rockauto was the unit of choice for me. No issues for years now.
