+1 on the brushes. I first replaced brushes as a preventive measure when my 1988 4Runner was around 200k miles, on the advice of the dealership parts guy. Have done it on 3 vehicles since, and 200k is a good time to do it. May not be advice for your current problem, but something to keep in mind.
