I heard that too. It is available online - rockauto.com has one but it has holes for the screws - not slots. That will NOT work - believe me! I bought an Asian, off ebay. Wasn't cheap...
The adjustment sets the idle speed. Or has that affect - not necessarily because that's what it is supposed to do. I noticed the transmission shifted into third when cold - it didn't before - had to wait for the motor to warm up. So I knew something happened. Though the new one still has two pins that show no continuity to any of the others? Who knows...
I've been around the Toyota block many times. Basic knowledge: RESET THE COMPUTER after ANY repair - even changing plugs.
Disconnect the negative battery terminal. If you like you can remove the little branch wire from the body and physically short the two cables or you can just use a wire. I have an old handle from some basket that's metal and fits nicely. Leave the cables in contact with each other for 2 minutes. This will "suck" all the data stored in the computer out and cause it to load the defaults from it's ROM chip. Basically start it over, from scratch. It would take quite a while to negate the invalid data without a restart. The old data can and WILL cause the repair to seem like it failed! Or, even worse, make it seem new problems have appeared!
Adjusting the position of the tps requires an engine shutdown to register it with the computer. Turning it just a fuzz makes a lot of difference. Initially I set it by the tach - 700 rpm idling, with motor hot. Then I tweaked it to find the "sweet spot."
I drove the truck a few blocks, cut the motor, tweaked the tps, several times. Finally I had it "dialed in." Then a 15 mile run on the freeway, followed by another engine shut down. FINALLY, it began to work properly.
The little truck is ancient, of course. I suspect the motor is not a '01 'cause it has two ordinary fan belts, as opposed to a serpentine, which it should have. But the wiring harness fits it, perfectly. Again - who knows? Maybe the tps can not be changed on an '01 motor... But I don't think that's right. I think they say that because "dialing it in" yourself will, no doubt, affect the pollution output.
