Parts interchangeability

Is there a reference sheet or data point that details what parts are interchangeable across the various years, models, series? I have an 01 SR5 4wd that I'm working on refining. Are all rear axle shafts the same, give or take ABS ring? are some longer or shorter than others? Does the 4wd model have the same transmission as the 2wd model? Inquiring minds need to know.

Pick a part, look it up on a Toyota dealers parts website and see what years and models it applies to. Most often listed toward the bottom of the page.

this thread and this post in that thread might be worth looking @

https://www.toyota-4runner.org/3336840-post10.html

also you can get a VIN and run it on this site. Toyota | Genuine Parts Catalogs | PartSouq Auto Parts Around the World

they have all the parts in general. some common generic parts will not be listed but those things like nut/bolts/clips can be hunted down if your persistent.

ToyoDIY.com has a reverse part number lookup function too.

Of course, sometimes the numbers don't match but the parts still interchange.

2WD vs. 4WD transmissions are *mostly* the same, but have different:
- Output shaft
- Tail shaft / adapter housing
- Pan/pickup/filter

Transmissions from 01/02 are incompatible with 96-00 transmissions. 96-00 have valve body differences between years, but are externally compatible.

Thanks so much for the information. I have a ton to learn yet about these machines. There are just so many similarities, yet differences all in the same generation. Fear not, I will prevail. The key to progress is information and effort.
