Ultragauge Blue Transmission temp

Hey Guys I have great news!

Last week I went ahead and purchased the Ultragauge Blue and downloaded the ultragauge app on my Iphone. I was talking with tech support for about a month before buying the ultragauge blue. They were not much help when it came to getting a PIDs for transmission temp for the 3rd gen 4runner. I know that people with the scangauge are able to get transmission temp using this PID.

Transmission Temperature F
TXD: 686AF101B4
RXF: 044105B40000
RXD: 2808
MTH: 00090005FFD8
NAM: TFT

Well I'm happy to say that the ultragauge app is able to read Xgauge. I was able to create a custom gauge with the data above.

I hope this helps anyone looking at getting the ultragauge set up. I was told by tech support that what ever I can do on my ultragauge blue I can do the same to the Ultragauge MX. I think the MX is harder to program vs the blue.

I bypassed the radiator and have the B&M 70268 trans cooler.

Thanks
Luke

Thanks Luke!

I just picked up 99 auto t4r over the weekend. This is my first automatic transmission I’ve owned in 10 years and want to keep an eye on that slushbox. Any idea if those codes will work on the wired v1.3 MX?

Hey brewmonger

I was told by support at Ultragauge that you can program Xgauge code onto the wired mx. Ultra gauge support is kinda lackluster for our 4runners ....they told me this wouldn't work but I programmed it anyways and it worked out fine.

Thanks
Luke

Thanks for sharing.

I had no luck getting trans temp on 1.3MX. See thread details here:

Ultragauge 1.3 MX Question - Trans Temp??

If you can get it working on MX, I would be grateful

Helpful info Luke, thanks for sharing.

Having used this for a while now, is the UG Blue still working well for you? Hopefully the IOS app has been at least somewhat decent too. If you've been using the alerts/notifications, kindly comment. Thanks much.

Hey Tony,

Yes, I still use it. It works great with no problems. I have the latest ios with the latest iPhone. I can't vouch for android because I've never tried it. The alerts work great and are customizable. I get alerted of low fuel or if the engine throws a code as well as other parameters if you want. You dont see a notification but you hear chime noise when you start the car up and then you have to open the app to see what it is alerting you for. If you need help setting it up I would be glad to help.

Thanks
Luke

Good to hear Luke, and mighty kind of you, thanks.

I currently make use of a SG2 and like that it is a dedicated solution, always there to see at a glance.

No alerts or notifications though...

Thinking of using the OBD2 port in the engine bay for this application (UG Blue). Not sure how bluetooth would work from there though, so might need to run an extension through the firewall...

Luke, a question for you.

Might you have coolant temp on your UG Blue? Curious how that differs from the tranny temp you added...

I've been in communications with UG and I was told, no surprise, that our 3rd gens use the 9141 protocol and that manufacturer gauges such as trans temp are not available via the 9141 protocol. Only OBDII standardized gauges are available for us, so I was told...

So, I responded that a few of us on this forum have had success in getting tranny temps with the Blue and MX options. I heard back that "there are a few codes running around out there that actually read the coolant temp and not the trans temp", thus my above ask.

Since @4Runner4Leon is about to make a UG purchase, this might interest him too...

EDIT/ADD - Geez, you have an external tranny cooler, bypassed, with different readings for sure. Nevermind.

Before I did my 5-speed swap I was reading the Transmission Temps through my UG MX. The temps on my gauge were definitely NOT coolant temps (not only because I had the coolant temp displayed right next to the tranny temp) cause my tranny temps would spike when expected (up-shifting and down-shifting constantly up hills) and drop and stabilize when switching OD off. The tranny temp readings I saw were always about what I expected given the scenario.

I did NOT have an external tranny cooler by the way.

Team_Jake, thanks for the additional feedback. UG support clearly is being cautious with its language, and I can appreciate that...

After much thought and research, I'm pretty certain at this point that I'll be getting UG Blue. This is based upon IOS 13 set to be released this Fall.

As of now, with an iPhone running IOS 12, connected to a head unit via Apple's CarPlay, let's say displaying Apple's Maps for navigation, one cannot view other apps on the iPhone's screen without losing the navigation on the head unit's screen. Two screens, one essentially wasted when using CarPlay...

With IOS 13, that will change. I'm tempted to install the public beta, but my iPhone is used a lot for my employment, and I decided to just wait until the official release.

So, CarPlay will be able to do what it does, and with the iPhone's screen available, it will be secured somewhere ideal, often with UG data and gauges displayed. When not, one can still be notified with UG alerts.

Well, selling the SG2 bracket as seen a few posts above, hopefully locally...

Indeed, the SG PID does the trick to get ATF temps. Here shortly after start-up.

Played around to create this fuel-focused one.

I imagine I'll refine more over time, but for now, quite happy. northwave161, thanks again.

northwave161, or anyone else, when selecting "Readiness" on your UG Blue, what results do you receive?

After Seafoam treatment last week I apparently had a couple codes that I was not aware of, until today when I attempted to get the 3rd gen a smog certificate. Damn. I cleared the codes but the guy said that it needs some miles to reach a state of readiness.

Not knowing what the 3rd gen's readiness should look like on the UG Blue, I'm not sure when everything is fine for me to go back to the smog shop. Thanks.

Readiness explained:

https://www.toyota-4runner.org/attac...t-eg02-003-pdf

For my 2000 3rd gen in CA, I need to address 4,5,10 & 11.

The manual for UG Blue, page 33 for readiness:

http://ultra-gauge.com/blue/ultragau...ser-manual.pdf

According to UG Blue, 10 and 11 (O2 sensors) are good...

I just received my UltraGauge Blue and am curious about where the gas pump icon and the E/F fuel gauge came from?
