Vibrations, and not the good kind.
Hey fellow 4Runner enthusiasts, I have a problem.
Recently my truck started putting out some pretty serious vibes, not in a good way. 97 4Runner, 2.7 5 Speed, 4x4, 270K miles.
What happens is it vibrates, almost like an out of balance drive shaft or a bad u-joint. The vibes increase with vehicle speed, not with engine speed. They are also more pronounced when the truck is under load, or oddly enough, coasting or in a gear too high (like when you would need to downshift on a grade), usually cruising minimizes the vibes but does not eliminate the shake.
I have checked my wheel balance. Checked and serviced the cv joint and drive shaft u-joints, front and rear, they are in pretty good shape with no apparent slop. The truck doesn't feel like it has pinion bearing play. My gear set seems a little worn, but not horribly bad. The problem seems like it has grown over time, but after a recent multi state road trip, probably 2000 miles or so, it is significantly worse than before.
Anyone experience anything like this before? Ideas. To my mind it seems like the problem could be in the transmission output/ transfer case areas, but how could I check this theory without taking stuff apart? Does anyone know where to get transfer case rebuild parts for these? (R100 I believe, not to be confused with its RF1A gear driven brethren)
