Roll forward while in Park

Hoping this is normal. Washed the truck on level ground for the first time in years (previously had a steep driveway). While standing on rear wheel to get to roof I noticed I could roll the truck froward about an inch or two. Is this considered normal?

Yes but don't do that, it is stressing the pin in the transmission.

That pin holds the entire weight of the vehicle.

Its why we have a Parking Brake or what some call and Emergency brake.

When one parks on an incline one should first set parking brake Then move trans shifter to P, this keeps the weight and stress off the pin. When getting back in, the reverse needs to happen, hold foot brake then release parking brake, again to keep the stress off the pin.

Does the pin break often, probably not, but I hate when I see someone park on an incline then you can see when they let off the brake and the vehicle moves that inch or so until it bumps into the pin, ouch.

All automatic transmissions will do this. Set your parking brake!!! (it adjusts your rear brakes on this particular model)

To get even more retentive, these are my steps:

Come to stop in desired location, and engage parking brake
Shift into N and let foot off brake. Vehicle should not move
(if vehicle still rolls, have your PB serviced asa-freakin'-p)
Then shift into P. Turn front wheels into the curb

Now you are using the pawl as the backup, letting the parking brake do the real work.
And if everything somehow fails, the vehicle doesn't just roll down the street!

Yup, if your loading up on the parking pawl to hold the initial vehicle load on a grade, you'll be able to feel what kind of bad stresses the whole parking pawl is up against when you take the shifter out of park.

All the replies were on point for this topic. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS!!!!! use your parking brake. Do not let the weight of the vehicle rest on the parking pawl for two reasons. #!, you could end up shearing the parking pawl and then you'll be crying at the expense to fix it. #2, your rear brakes stay in adjustment by regularly using the parking brake. The rear brakes only do around 25% or your braking, but you will notice the difference in braking power with them way out of adjustment.

You really don't need any servicing for the parking brake other than regularly using it to keep the rear shoes adjusted. If you're only getting 7-9 clicks from the parking brake handle, it's adjusted correctly. The times I've of heard of people having problems is the people who live in the rust belts of the country and their bell cranks freeze up due to corrosion.

well I want to add to the "always use your parking brake " to add weather permitting.
when you get 2 feet of snow, and temps dont get above zero for weeks at a time the parking brake cables etc DO stick. Not just on 4runners but many many cars up here.. and having your brakes frozen up is no fun
Otherwise, when it gets back to above freezing here, I always use my parking brake
