You should do the wise thing here and stop replying.

you should do the wise thing and provide any evidence at all that different brands of tires in the same size can damage the 4wd system on a 3rd gen 4runner

Ok fellows. Let's not be harsh on other members contributing to a thread. Everyone has different levels of experience here and are only trying to help.

Is the 98 the OP mentioning a sr5 or limited?

both of those mention viscous couplings and open center differentials being the cause of issues with mismatched tires, which has absolutely nothing to do with a part time 4wd system.

now as I originally stated, post evidence of a 3rd gen 4runner that incurred damage from mismatched tires

Let me take a guess here, you sit at a desk all day but you've changed your own oil once or twice and own a shitload of shiny tools so you think you're an auto tech?

I'm not arguing with a pompous ass on an online forum. Good luck OP!

lol, we could have just agreed to disagree but you had to go and get all upset

actually I don't own any tools, or even a toyota, I take my civic to the toyota dealer for oil changes which is why I signed up on this forum

I guess I asked too much. Calling people names is a violation of the forum rules. Lots of assumptions here. Probably best to agree to disagree and get back to the task of helping the OP. With their issue at hand.

How can driving on dry asphalt ruin a 4WD system? Where am I going to find a straight dirt road that goes for a few miles? How exactly am I supposed to keep my 4WD system maintained properly?

I’m not mad at you. I’m mad at my situation. I baby my 4Runner. I can’t help but think those idiots at the dealership didn’t do a proper job. And on top of that I can’t leave my house to take it over there until this stupid virus lets up.

Your tire size wont matter in this case unless it was a totally different size. if its a 265/65/R16 for instance no matter the brand, as long as the tread type is the same for example if theyre all street tires or m/ts etc. In addition to this, it is 100% impossible for the differentials to have different gears or when you engaged into 4x4 you woulda blew the tcase and probably the transmission not to mention broke the teeth on both diffs. Like I said prior, check your fluid levels. I see you said you were not driving on a dry road. country roads are fine. When you say the front axle was done are you talking about a CV axle? If your rig is pulling to one side in 4x4 but not 2 wheel drive then you need to make sure you have your vehicle aligned, and tires balanced, being that you have two different brand tires it sounds like you may not have them properly balanced. Your tcase is perfectly fine as long as it engages and disengages through 4hi 4lo and 2hi. just check your fluid levels. anything is possible and a seal can go at any time.

In a part time 4wd system like most 4runners have, the front and rear are pretty much locked together when 4wd is engaged and don’t allow the front and rear tires to rotate at different speeds so when you go around a turn it causes binding or even damage

You can drive on asphalt to keep your system maintained, just disengage it if you’re going to be turning. When I do it I just engage it for maybe just 1/4 mile at a time on straight roads and do that several times a month

The techs over at Toyota Dealer must scratch their heads when you roll in with your 4WD Civic for an oil change😎

Both tires are the same size and both have all terrain street tread. They are almost exactly the same. With all do respect I don’t believe having different tires brands is what’s causing the issue.

I called the Toyota dealership and made an appointment. I’m going to have them check both axels and transfer case. As well as everything pertaining to the 4WD system. If there’s anything you can think of that I should have them check please let me know. Thank you.
