Driver Door Key Lock Question

Does the driver's door key insert allow for both locking and unlocking of the door/s with the key (apparently "Yes", see below)? I know, sounds like a commons sense answer, but I just picked up my first 4R (2000 Limited), and the one and only key that came with it only unlocks the door/s, but will not turn counterclockwise to lock the door/s. (I have to lock the doors by pushing the lock button on the inside before I close the door; the one and only remote keyless entry FOB that came with the vehicle doesn't work, as that is a whole other post.)

I would imagine that it should both lock and unlock the door, but interestingly enough, the thing is that after I went to Home Depot to get a second key made (for the wife), that key both locks and unlocks (turns both ways) the door/s. How is that possible, that the second key, that was matched off of the first key, does both functions, but the first key only does the lock function?

Confused

should have gotten two keys. New keys with sharper edges may work better.

Keys can wear. That is unusual. However the new key must be a little crisper with the cuts. If this is the case, what if you make 2nd key off the copy that works and if that works well. Just use those 2 keys. I mostly graphite my lock tumblers once or twice a year to keep them moving smoothly.

I had the exact same issue with my only key and locks when I bought my ‘02 T4R last April. I had two new keys made and all worked great until the hot summer months. After researching online, I replaced all four lock motors (cheap on eBay), and now everything works great again. With age, the motors become worn and also sensitive to heat. I also purchased 2 remotes (again cheap on eBay) and programmed them by following tutorials on YouTube.

Try having a Toyota dealer cut a new key based on key code (if you have it) or VIN number. It's usually under $10, and in my case the at least some of the power lock problems were solved. I still need to replace the drivers side lock cylinder, just worn out...

Don't forget to lubricate the front door locks, rear gate lock and ignition, I like a good squirt of wd40 (with the little red spray attachment), displaces water and lubes...makes locks and keys works smoother and last Longer...

I bought new keys based off the key code for the ex’s 97 Puppy hauler.

I had to remove the drivers door lock and remove the tumblers and get all the road grime out of it.

I tried spraying first with zero luck.

I never had to clean lock tumblers yet I do have one in a tailgate completely frozen. I really doubt its salvageable. The PO said it's been frozen for years. I do have the keycode so I can get a changed at anytime now.

Recently I couldn't turn my driver door lock at all and didn't have an extra key. I just bought new locks on amazon and swapped them. They're only $10. I now have door keys and ignition keys, but my door locks work now.
