Manual hub question
I got a set of manual locking hubs/spindles and axles off a tacoma today, I did a search on this but couldn't really find anything definitive. since the bearings and axles are in good shape, I was going to just put them in as is and not worry about the abs until a later time, does anyone know if the speedometer will still function if only the rear wheel speed sensors are hooked up?

Yes, speedometer should still work with just rear ABS. I have heard of instances where the speedometer might flicker a little though.
You could try disconnecting your front ABS now and see just to be sure.

thanks, I'll try disconnecting the fronts to see what happens. I did read a thread where someone said the speedometer would quit after going over a bump, but the only reason I can think that would happen is if a wheel lifted off the ground while driving

What year is your truck? Do you have 4WD button on the 4WD shift lever? Just want to check you have AWD or not.

On early trucks the speedometer will function perfectly. I believe it's only the 01-02 with the updated abs and traction control system that reads anything off the abs sensors.

I have manual hubs & multi-mode. I pressed the AWD button just to see what would happen shortly after installing the hubs with them unlocked (bad idea) -- I lost power to the wheels then RPMs started increasing gradually...in a panic I pressed the 4WD button again, some gears in the transfer case started to grind and then it clunked back into 2WD. Moral of the story is don't ever do that, haha!
Recently I did press the AWD button and I forgot to lock the hubs (this is after my 5-speed swap)...same thing started happening. I quickly shifted into neutral, came to a stop, pulled the e-brake, got out and locked the hubs...all good after that and everything functioned normally.

Mine is a 97 5 speed swapped with the standard J shift transfer case, I do kind of want to multimode swap eventually
where does the earlier 4runner get the speedo signal from if not the abs sensors?

Speed sensor on the transfer case.

All ABS equipped gen3 4Runners use the ABS system for the speedo signal. The 01/02 have a much more complicated ABS system, but the speedo is still driven in the same way.

Thanks everyone, I'll pull the sensors and see what happens, I don't believe I have a speed sensor on the transfer case but I'll check again

Is your multimode transfer case the older style with the J shifter and a button on the side? If so do you happen to know if it's a self contained unit with its own ecu and wiring harness or does it interact with the engine ecu in some way? I'm trying to determine how hard it would be to put one on my 97

It's the older style with the J-shifter and a button on the side (stock '99 limited t-case). It has its own 4WD ECU located in the driver footwell area. Wiring could be complex, not something I would want to tackle (but I resent electrical stuff).
Another thread is talking about the resurrection of the Lefty which is something I'd want to swap into my 4Runner...so if that comes to fruition then I'll be parting ways with my multi-mode t-case if you (or someone else) have interest in one.

I looked at the EWD and based on my rudimentary understanding it doesn't look impossible, I'd probably have to figure out a way to add some indicator lights if I wanted it to be all professional looking.
one more question for those of you with manual hubs, is it necessary to disable my add system or can I leave it alone and just put the tacoma CV axles directly into my front diff?

Don't need to worry about ADD.

They'll pop in just fine if you don't want to delete the add.

My wife put manual hubs on her '96 a few years ago. The ABS warning light obviously came on, but the speedometer did continue to work - running off the rear wheel sensors. Sort of, anyhow. It began dropping speedo readings at highway speeds after driving for a bit, only way to 'reset' it was to slow way down again. After messing around with that issue for a while with no resolution - she finally added a Tacoma speed sensor onto the transfer case. The ABS equipped 4Runners (all US market 3rd gens?) just have a metal plug/stopper stuck int hat position. Just a plain metal slug with an o-ring on it. Remove it, install the sensor, and do some wiring. Now here speedo/odo runs off that and has no issue at all.
Later on, she replaced the front wheel bearings and had the machine shop install ABS sensor rings as part of the job - and reenabled her ABS. But didn't bother to remove the Taco speed sensor.
