Make sure you have the correct one.

And yes, it is really hard to get in there. Push on it right as it is entering the tube, not just from the handle at the top.

Oh yeah that's the method I've been using. Right hand just right above the tube trying to keep it straight.

I usually have one hand on the handle & my other hand on the most distal end of the dipstick right by the opening manually feeding it in to prevent it from binding.
I had to take the top part off before when the stick first broke. Thankfully it stuck up out of the lower tube and I had to pull it out with plyers. Still took a good amount of force.

Well I called up McGeorge Toyota parts, as they've been my go to for a hot minute now, they gave me the part number that I ordered based on the VIN.

Out of curiosity, do any of you know what part number yours needs? I'll edit this with the one I got once I get home

About 70 miles from Newnan, haha.

I'll have to try to get in there this weekend or sometime after work. What's the best approach position? Engine bay or below?

When I had a Tacoma you could just stick your finger in the fill hole and it should just be barely wet. You would fill it until it started to drip then stop and let it drain a little and close it up. It was a closed transmission no dipstick

2nd gen? Yeah I remember it has to be a "slight dribble". But I do not think the 3rs gen 4runners have a fill hole.

I'm not quite sure. The Tacoma was a 2000 3rz 5 speed base 4x4. And the runner I have is a 2000 5vz auto 4x4 sr5 Wich I haven't really dug into yet so idk if the tranny is similar or not. I am assuming they are very similar you should be able to check the fluid level from the fill hole

to find the sticker you have to go under the car a mirror would be a big help. I may have someone in Neuman that might have some advice.

The auto is very different from the 5 speed, it has to be filled through the dipstick tube and has no fill hole. To get an accurate measure of the fluid level in the auto it needs to be checked with the dipstick while hot

Like one of those mirrors on a telescopic rod?

Okay that's what I thought, I didn't think it had a full bolt.

If you've already removed that part & it's still binding, dropping the pan would be my next move to give it a thorough inspection for possible obstructions. Having a stiff putty knife with a beveled edge to gently tap around the pan to break the FIPG seal makes it significantly easier to remove. I like using it better than specialized tools made for that kind of thing because it's not as thick so it won't mar the mating surface. If you've gone that far might as well change your transmission filter or clean it.

I actually had it changed before when I had the transmission flushed. Yeah I'm thinking of dropping the pan is probably the best idea. Now I just got to order that gasket sealer and get some fluid. For some reason the fluid I use is always kind of hard to find, like most stores only have a single bottle...haha

You're right, it is a bad design. It took me some serious fiddling with mine to get it back in again. I think I bent the heck out of it a few times trying to get it back in.
