Everywhere i read says a 96-98 with a scangauge cant read trans temp. Is this because there is no code for it? There are the x-gauges to program in. I had a sg on a few cars years ago so im familiar with it.
From what I understand, ultragauge and sg2 differences are one you can program gauges in. If programming trans temp in on a sg2 is all it takes then ill shell out the extra 80 bux.
Now i find out theres a turbogauge!?? Too bad my mpguino isnt this simple to install and use..

The transmission temperature is not reported to the ECU is my understanding. It's like the temperature sensor that sends info to the gauges, it's a dummy sensor that only goes off when you've ruined your 4Runner.
The 99+ have a sensor that actually reports data to the ECU.
The only way you're gonna see your trans temp is via a mechanical gauge. As said, 99+ are the only ones that can see the temp via a Scangauge.

The above is all correct. You will not be able to read trans temp info via your scan gauge on your 98 3rd Gen. All you get is an "Idiot" light on the dash if you cook your ATF and it reaches around 300 degrees.
Here's a video showing how I installed an aftermarket gauge on my 98.

In the early 3rd Gens there is no provision for trans temps, I'm using Torque Pro, and a column pod with a mechanical gauge, It's been documented there is a sensor in the trans, but it does not report actual temps to the ECU, its a go/no go failure sensor that triggers an idiot light.
This is what I'm using.
And I tapped into the outbound hose going to the coolers So I'm reading my highest temps.
If you search, every guy has a different opinion on what temps to read.
use what you think is best for you.

They all use the same sensor, it is just that the ECU doesn't report it via OBD-II on the '96-'98 trucks.

What gauge pod is that? Ill probably go this route.

I provide a link to that pod in the video above. Open the video, go to YouTube and check the video description. Everything you need to do this job is listed in the video description.
