Driver side upper shock mount(frame) blew out

First things first. I love my 99 4runner and don’t want to call it because of this, but I’m not sure it’s a fixable situation. I think it was caused by a pot hole I didn’t see and then some slight wheeling afterwards. But my shock blew thru the frame mounting point. Any thoughts?? Just don’t want to call it the end of its life.

its requiring a sign in to see the pic. Can you just upload it via Imgur: The magic of the Internet so everyone can see and advise?

I'm curious what the options are as well, I've been worried about that cuz of the potholes in Michigan lol. Although I don't really offroad.

Hopefully some of this is working. Not sure how else to upload pics. iPhone won’t let me save them in smaller format

Thanks for posting the pic i can’t seem to get goin. That reinforcement thing seems nice but that’s going on one that isn’t busted already. So I’m a little nervous about trying to fix mine before I reinforce it. But it’s a start. $40 beats dropping a lot more money into it. I’ll look into it deeper when I get home and have time. But thanks

hey, thanks for the referral!

if it were me, I'd probably grab a straight tower off of junkyard frame (not sure if Toyota still offers them new, but it's certainly possible) and section in the top 1/3 of it; however, once that coilover is removed you'll get a better idea of whether or not the tower can be bent back into shape and welded up enough to use a reinforcement plate on it as it is.

I'd also be curious about the compressed length of your shock - looks like it might be too long for the amount of uptravel you have? - the bumps stop should be stopping the upward movement of the LCA before it bottoms out the shock... with that really tall upper mount adapter in there I wouldn't be surprised if the coilover is now too long?

Looks like Toytec Boss coilovers from the pic? Did you have stock suspension on there before or another lift coilover? How long have your current coilovers been on there? Wondering if there was any stress build up to that. Would definitely recommend pulling the coilover to get a better idea of the damage.

Good LORD, what did you run over, a grenade?

Is this common actually? lol

(Sorry about your shock tower, btw- not making light of your situation)

Thanks for the quick responses. This happened yesterday and just noticed the damage at the end of the day and I’m stuck working. Will try to get it in the garage and rip some stuff off in the next couple days.
I’m hoping some minor welding can fix it up but we will see more when I get it in the garage.
They are the toytec boss suspension. Had many problems with the rears but the front coil overs have been pretty good so far. My bump stops hit before the coil overs compress all the way. I think there is a good 1.5-2” of untouched rod. So don’t think I’m bottoming out in the front. Rear is a constant bottoming out issue and that will be on a different forum.

Thanks for the quick input. I appreciate knowing it may not be totally lost

No need to apologize. My gf did say I was acting really calm about the whole thing. But I have another vehicle and no use getting upset about stuff. Life’s too short
