Auto recycler trouble

Hi, I’m trying to convert my ‘99 T4R from crank windows to power windows. It came stock with power windows and all of the wiring is still in the doors so it should just be a matter of bolting in the new motors, plugging in the switches, and putting the door panels on.

I live in the SF Bay Area and I had heard a lot about the Toyota recyclers in Rancho Cordova, so I decided to check them out for the parts I need. Today I drove up there (almost 2 hours each way). They didn’t have sufficient door panels but I did buy window motors, regulators and switches.

When I got home, I took off my drivers door panel to test out the switch, and realized that they had given me the wrong one. I believe the one they gave me is off a ‘97 and it has a small piece of plastic that stops it from being able to be plugged into my wires. On all of their paperwork there is large print type that states they will take a 25% restocking fee on any item returned. I’m hoping to avoid this and I’m wondering if anyone has any ideas or advice for dealing with this or fixing it. I’m wondering if I just shave off the restricting piece of plastic if it will work? Any help is greatly appreciated!

i believe there were two different harnesses, one had auto windows for both front windows. while the older had auto down only for driver front window. i believes the years are 96-98? and then 99+ should be the same? so you are gonna have to get parts from a 99+

You are right on the money. The harnesses are different on all 4 doors on 99+ after they added the auto function to the passengers side.

Thank you all for the clarification. I appreciate the help. I guess if there’s a silver lining to this it’s that my passengers will enjoy their automatic window.

Well I called the recyclers this morning and they were really nice about it and said they would exchange the part for the correct one.

Somebody converted your 4Runner to manual windows? Or does it turn out that the crank window trucks are factory prewired? Do you also have power locks?

Probably not helping you but this is so interesting.

Yeah it’s a very interesting situation. So the truck is an SR5, it came with power windows, locks, etc. The previous owner converted the power windows to cranks, but luckily left all the wiring in. He also disabled the rear window. Since that is a feature I’m really into I’m hoping that all he did was turn on the window lock before removing the switch panel.

The locks are also interesting, he had it set up so that you can only use the key to lock/unlock the doors, and you can only lock them from the passenger keyhole, while unlocking can only be done from the driver side keyhole.

Actually if anyone has any ideas about how I might be able to revert them to normal I’d be very interested. Maybe when I put the switches back in they will still be able to be controlled by the buttons... I would also like to get a factory remote, the one that can raise and lower the rear window, but I don’t know about compatibility, especially with my special lock situation.

I would love to eventually confirm, but it would be my guess that a crank window truck would be pre-wired for the power windows. I'm only assuming that they wouldn't have built different body harnesses without the minimal wiring the windows and locks take for the small amount of 4runners that didn't have power.

Typically, the main harnesses would have the wiring for that kind of equipment, but the smaller harnesses would not, or would be omitted entirely. So the door itself, might have a harness that only served the speakers, say, but complete wiring would be there from the first connector on.

I sometimes miss my crank windows from my old 91.

Only sometimes. Most of the time I'm glad it's powered now.

Update: They were pretty nice about it and offered an exchange if I drove back up. On the way I bought the door panels I needed and I felt pretty good about it.

Today my dad and I were doing the conversion and we had an issue with the wiring harness that goes to the motor, from the door. Mine looked like this, and the motor had a white, circular, two pronged connection.

We spent over an hour trying to figure out if this was a result of the PO’s modifications. Finally I did some research and found out that even the motors for the ‘99+ 4Runners are different, due to the auto window function. So I drove back up and exchanged for the right ones. Tomorrow I should have power windows. Hopefully this is helpful for someone in the future.

The right motor

There's a silver 2000 SR5 4Runner at the Fairfield Pick N Pull, just came in this week. I was there yesterday and nobody had pulled off the door panels yet. If you're looking for window/lock/wiring items.

Interesting indeed. Before you bought it, did you do a background check on the PO to make sure he's not wanted in any kidnapping cases? Geez those are some weird "mods" for sure.
