1997 4runner Transmission question R150F

Hi Everyone.

I am currently undergoing a transmission replacement. I have a 97 4runner with the V6 engine and a Manual transmission.

From my research I have an R150f. So I picked up a used R150F and was in the process of swapping it out. Everything was fine until I went to match the transfer case onto the new to me transmission. The bell housing marched up fine but the transfer case does not match up at all.

Can you all help me identify what transmissions I actually do have.

Do you know what vehicle your new R150F came from? There are two main versions of the R150F:

- The 1988-1995 version that was found on V6 Pickups / 4Runners.
- The 1996-2004 version that was found on V6 Tacomas / 4Runners.

The bell housings and tail housings are different between the two, and if your tail-housing is not matching up to your transfer case then it is likely your new R150F is the older version.

I want to say that all internals are the same between the two (except I believe the input shaft length is different), so you may be able to swap housings / input shaft if you're up for the task. I not totally sure on that though, you need to do some research...it may be easier just finding the correct R150F.

...

EDIT: Okay I see your photos now of both transmissions, yes your new transmission is the incorrect version.

I think those photos show two different transmissions

Team jake is right about the input shaft length, it’s longer on the older r150f so won’t bolt up to your engine. Your transfer case should bolt up to any r150f that came in a vehicle with a drivers side drop transfer case, if it doesn’t then It’s almost definitely the older version that used the passenger side drop case
