Turbo Build

Edit: took 2 months, but it’s all together and making boost!

So I’ve been dreaming to do a turbo build on the 4runner ever since I stumbled on Clownmeats build thread ( Clownmeat's build thread ) a few years back, but, life is busy, and it’s hard to find the time and money. Anyways, I’ve finally started to acquire parts for the turbo build.

My primary goal in doing a turbo build is…surprise surprise, POWER! I find myself pulling a lot of trailers around, and often find that the 4runner lacks the power to pull what I want. I’ve already done the TBU, and im planning to put a 7 prong + brake controller. I’ve considered figuring out what type of helper springs would work with my rig so I don’t have the issues with sag, but that’s beside the point.

As for the “why not get something more geared toward towing” question, there are several parts to the answer.
1. I love my 4runner, I’ve done a lot of work to it, and it would be hard to part with it.
2. I love driving stick, and there are only a few options for newer trucks that are stick. New Tacoma, and 2019 and prior Ram 2500.
-Tacoma – too small, owned one before, not great for a family. And I had to strap a 2x4 down to keep it from falling out of the bed…seriously. And they can’t tow any more than the 4runner.
-Ram – sounds sweet…sounds expensive

Ultimately, my wife and I decided that it would be cheaper to put some money in to the 4runner to spruce it up, and make it more suited to what I do than it would to go out and get something newer.

I’ve never boosted anything before (other than some larger pulleys for my 89 SC MR2, but that doesn’t really count), so I’m looking forward to learning through this process. I’m planning to try and document what all I do and choices I made and why, which in large part will likely be “because that’s what Clownmeat did”.

I’m also planning to document all my cost as best I can, even if it’s just a cheap bolt or gasket. Clownmeat says he did his build for ~800 bucks, but he also had a lot of parts and things laying around that he was able to reuse (turbo timer, boost gauge, wideband). I’m hoping his estimate of 800 bucks is accurate, because I spent a portion of my budget toward wet oakle seat covers and the TBU.

This is ambitious, I love it! I will say it right now though, $800 isn't even close to enough. The piggyback software or the turbo alone can cost $800. But, it can be done for much cheaper than a supercharger build!

My 4runner is also my first FI build, but won't be my last! I've learned a little about tuning these 4Runners so my build thread about tuning closed loop (part-throttle) might be a help for you when you get to that part. When towing you'll need that closed loop tuning to get that torque you need to pull. I would suggest also picking a turbo that builds boost quickly for that low-end grunt rather than high end power.

If you haven't watched Tom's Turbo Garage, he does a turbo LS Tacoma. It's not a 5VZ-FE, but he gives some great tips on how and ideas of where to place a turbo in a Tacoma, our flat bed twins: YouTube.

Also lots of historical data on customtacos.com about turbo 5VZ-FE's. I say historical because the forum is pretty much dead now.

Subscribing to your build, excited to see where it goes!

I honestly don't even consider a turbo as a viable option for the V6 trucks. The availability and ease of install and serviceability of the TRD blower setup is just too damn easy after doing it. Took literally 3 hours start to finish.

I have turbo'd a 4Runner as well, but a 4 cylinder, and even with the easier to access and maneuver exhaust setup, it still was a multi day endeavor with a lot more tools involved. Dollar for dollar end cost was roughly the same, but I did buy both used and got a deal on both so grain of salt.

The turbo certainly has more potential for power output, but the supercharger keeps the 3.4 very drivable, and even in stock form gives my 4,000lb, stock geared on 35's, 270k mile automatic Tacoma enough pep in it's step in my opinion even at the stock 4 psi. My expectation for power out of these trucks is certainly low though.

At the end of the day the 2nd gen Tacoma is 100% a better choice for towing. A lot of people severely undersell the towing capability of mid-size or even half ton trucks, but my dad and I regularly tow 5-6,000 lbs with his 05, and in every regard it tows better than a 3rd gen 4runner could ever hope. Seeing the amount of people that sell their Tacoma to buy a full size truck so they can tow a trailer with a couple quads or a small camper boggles my mind.

4Runners really just hate towing anything heavy... For the money, I'd suggest just buying a used beater V8 long bed work truck for those few times pulling something, and keep the heavy wear and tear off the 4Runner.

But the 4Runners do like boost...

Well, its already the workhorse that gets abused, just trying to make the abuse less painful. I frequently pull around a 2 axle bri-mar dump trailer and a car trailer.

I think many guys have stated that a turbo option on a 3rd gen is doable but it is much more practical to super charge it. You definitely would have tons of help on this forum if you do the SC option where as your turbo build would put you out there with limited help and support .

Not sure how much weight you want to tow with your 3rd gen but I wouldn't tow much with this thing even with a SC. These vehicles just were not designed to tow very much and their stated 5,000 lbs tow rating is a joke unless it is on flat terrain or down hill. My 5th gen is much better towing but I still don't like it. The 3rd gen will need a transmission cooler, bigger better radiator and bigger brakes to start if towing alot.

I know OP dismissed you here, but you do bring up good points. The simplicity:Power outcome on the TRD blower is attractive.

Compared to a TRD blower, which was designed for these engines, a turbo setup (done right), is going to get pricey and it is without question much more complex.

Items like boost creep, boost leaks, electronic vs. manual boost control, welding, turbo quality (chinese vs. something like Precision Turbo $$$), injector size, fuel pump output, ability to regulate fuel pressure, intercooler... friggin tapping and drilling your oil pan for the oil feed, ETC... it is an endless and EXPENSIVE list.

And, regardless of what anyone says, NO, you will not get it right the first time. You will likely tear it all apart and have to re-do a lot of things...including your engine itself.

I admire anyone who turbocharges a 5VZ, but the blower hands down is much more effective from a $$ to outcome perspective.

You’re right, I did. I didn’t start the thread to argue the points of a turbo/SC/different vehicle etc, I started it to document my build and what I learn along the way.

If you wanna discuss all that stuff, let’s start a different thread...

I bought a bunch of exhaust components this week. It should be everything I need to get from the flange at the back of the cat, to where I will mount the turbo. My original plan was to put the turbo in roughly the same location as the current muffler is since there are already exhaust hangers there and a heat shield. I live around a few diesel trucks, and listening to their obnoxiously loud turbo whistle all the time annoys the hell out of me, so I really don’t want my rig to be stupid loud or annoying to drive down the road and have a conversation with someone. Anyways, apparently adding the muffler in will help with the turbo whistle some, and keep the exhaust a little quieter. So I might end up putting the turbo closer to the back of the cat so I can pipe in a muffler still. Need to get under the truck and take some good measurements and look around to see what I can figure out.

I am planning to use a turbo with the same specs as Clownmeat, t3/t4. I learned in my research that t3 is for the exhaust side of the housing, and t4 on the intake. Makes sense. I haven’t yet decided if I will buy a turbo that’s internally gated or if I’ll buy a separate waste gate, which I still need to do more research on. If I go with an external waste gate it’ll change my exhaust setup slightly/be more work, which has me leaning towards internally gated. Apparently the tuner crowd only goes with externally gated for some reason. Anyways, I’ll cross that bridge when I get there.

Things I bought:
· 2.25” exhaust flange – 9.99
· 2.25” to 3” reducer – 10.79
· 4’ of 3” exhaust piping – 26.48
· Toyota O2 sensor flange – 12.59
· 3” V-band clamp and flanges – 20.88
· 90 degree t3 turbo flange – 40.27
· Total: 121 bucks

Hopefully at some point in the next month or so all this will come in and I’ll get an opportunity to assemble it. Covid-19 has shipping times all sorts of wonky.

What boost level/pressure are you aiming for? Are you going to use an intercooler?

My worries are that a medium / high boost application without any fuel / timing mods, with the added towing loads, might be a recipe for ping city!

7 psi and I wasn’t planning to. From what I’ve gleaned from clownmeats thread, the rear mount setup cools the intake temps significantly. So that coupled with cooler spark plugs seems to have mitigated that concern. I seem to remember him saying he had intake temps in the 120’s, but I’d have to go back and dig through his thread to find what he said.

Fair. Best of luck to you man. Didnt mean to hijack or change your thread direction, but was just stating what seems to be the obvious I guess. It'll be a unique build!

have a look at Comp oil-less turbos if youre open to considering an option that doesnt require tapping the pan (or if you dont want to worry about scavenging issues).

FYI: I think this has already been done and documented last year/this year on this site and the builder removed the entire system and has it for sale on this site as of 2 months ago.
