That oil was/is awesome. The grey bottle right? Stopped using for the same reason too.

I get a couple cases of 6quarts 5w-30 Mobil1 full synthetic from Costco every time it's on sale for the 3 cars in our family.
I did see recently they are selling Kirkland brands now. That might be a little cheaper without needing stuff to be on sale but I'm wondering if they're as good as Mobil1

19963.4lsr5 made a good read/link above. You should check it out.
The Amazon Basics oil seems to be on the same level a Mobil 1.
Costco synthetic and Walmart synthetic oil seems to be almost the same.

Used Rotella T6 for a couple years, but switched to the Amazon Basics oil recenty.

I’ve been using the Pennzoil platinum and Ultra for years.
My fall back is Motorcraft 5w-30 or Rotella T5

That is correct. Trying to find Ultra these days is all but impossible.
I am using Shell Rotella Gas Truck oil in my sister’s 2013 4Runner with great results. Maybe a tad too thin for the 5vz but YMMV

My local Walmart has the Ultra on the shelf 90% of the time.

I've been using Mobile 1 coming up on 100k miles now with toyota oil filters. I'm at 308K miles now. I noticed the whole lubed area of the head was covered in an even varnish when I did my VCG back 65K miles ago. No sludge, just gold color varnish. My oil change interval is at 5K.
Would Pennzoil Ultra Platinum keep it cleaner than Mobile 1 did?

There's a 5W30 version of that.

You could always pull the passenger side VC and take a picture and then run the ultra for a few years and compare. I doubt the Ultra would get rid of the varnish.
After watching his videos I am really thinking of switching to the Supertech as a fall back oil instead of the Motorcraft. I do use their synthetic gear oil already.
