I use Shell Rotella Gas Truck. All the protection of Rotella T-6 diesel oil, but with formulation for gas engines. And it’s only $21 for a 5-qt at my local Menard’s.

Synthetic Motor Oil | Gas Truck Synthetic Engine Oil | Shell ROTELLA(R)

I have been using amsoil for years...it WAS cost competative as my son is a dealer.Ive used the amsoil in everything for over 100k miles....tranny,diffs.etc..Did vc gaskets this past spring and no slidge.....but thats old days...he lives in Oregon and now I live in Alaska. ONly one amsoil dealer in this town...prices are crazy high.

Well.......
I drove up this past summer. So this past fall it did an oil change and I went to Penzoil full synthetic... I was surprised how fast it changed color... I always use the ydzz3 filter.I cant imagine the color change is from sludge etc it has broken loose...im thinking just poor oil. Just did a change to Castrol full synthetic and of course ydzz3 filter.
Gonna run this for a bit till I find something better.....research and this thread.

One little side point...I have never owned a car that has gone through so many temp extremes as this rig has done this year...some days down to -40 plus wind....wonder if it has anything to do with it.

I have been running Valvoline conventional 10W-30 in mine for 11 of my 12 years of owning it (106k-200k miles). Last year, I went to the same oil, in 5W-30, and I noticed slightly better fuel economy. My local Walmarts stopped carrying that oil (or maybe Valvoline stopped making it), and now they sell the same thing in a synthetic blend, so that is what I now use, in 5W-30.

For me, the only reason I would go to full synthetic is because of the longer intervals between changes. Because of that, it probably works out to a little less money per year, even though full synthetic is more expensive. Plus, much less time is spent on oil changes, because of the longer intervals.

There are lots and lots of 300-400k+ engines out there that have run regular conventional oil all of their lives, so I would never switch to synthetic for the only reason being that my engine may last longer. Any vehicle of mine with 300-400k on it would be completely ragged out, and I wouldn't want it anymore, even it if the engine still ran like new.

I don't care what anyone says, though - I would never go 10k miles between changes. My wife's Civic requires full synthetic, and its oil is black and looks real old at 6k change intervals. 6-7.5k is the most I would ever go, on any full synthetic oil, despite what some people say.

The conventional wisdom, as I read it, is that very low ambient temps and the associated long warmups are the equivalent of the common city dweller's constant short trips. I know that constant short trips will darken the oil---any oil--- sooner than if the engine was fed a diet of long, easy highway trips.

+1 for T6. At least once a year I try to run a bottle of MMO for the duration of an oil change; if I recall one quart of MMO+four quarts of 5w40 like Rotella T6 cuts it down to 5w30
