Another misfire thread...

Hey guys. I commented on another thread but I didnt want to take over his so I'm starting this one.

So my runner was my daily driver for several years, then I had to park it for about 2 years, turning it on periodically and driving every once and awhile. Now I've been using it as my daily driver for about 3 months with no issues. I changed the oil when I started driving it again. Over the last month I've redone most of the front suspension and put my old sound system back in ( 2 12" subs).

Cut to yesterday I was driving around running errands and I turned on the runner to find it running really rough and throwing codes. It was random misfire, missfire on cylinders 2,3, and 6 and running lean. I brought it home and changed the plugs, wires had to be ordered, after that it ran fine for most of the day today but started back up this afternoon. This time only misfiring on cylinder 3. I'm going to swap the wires out as soon as they come in and I inspected the sensors and intake and neither was bad. Could I just have a faulty wire? Also, another thing is that the problem itself seems intermittent, it seems every other time I turn on the runner it runs just fine and idles smooth and then the next time I turn it on its back to the rough idle and codes. Any help would be appreciated, if anyone thinks its more then just the wires I'd prefer to buy the parts now and get it done this weekend as this is my daily driver for work.

Thanks guys.

Possibly just a wire. When you removed the plugs from the cylinders, especially #3, did they smell like gas?

Does your code reader read long and short fuel trims?

Maybe the easiest step would be to move around the coils, clear the codes, and see what the money light says from there.

Just had an email saying my NGK wires will be delayed until further notice... already called all the auto parts stores in town and nobody carries them. Anyone know of a good replacement?

You could try Toyota Parts Deal in Ca. 19037-62010, replaced by 19037-62050 (2000 V6) for $65.
If you wanted to go aftermarket, I remember brillo_76 started a spark plug wire thread recently.

Thanks! Just placed an order with local dealer. They usually have my stuff within a day or 2. I actually have a previous order still waiting to be picked up so I'll get these at the same time. Hope this works. Really don't want to drop 425 on 3 coil packs or worse...

Small update, I put seafoam through the engine to see if it would clear up any gunk that could be causing my misfire. Not sure if its good or bad but I saw absolutely no results from it. Put the entire can through the intake as Timmy showed and then let it sit for 10 minutes before driving it around for about 15 minutes. No smoke whatsoever. Still throwing codes, ill update when the wires get installed.

It looks like you have freeze frame for p0303 what does that look like? Cylinder 3 and 6 are companion cylinders so possibility of being a coil. Wondering why you now have a p0172 instead of the p0171.

Swap a coil. Clear all codes and see if the cylinder faults move with the coil.

That last Screenshot was right after doing the seafoam. I thought that was why it was reading too rich. I'll pull the freeze frame tomorrow when I drive to work and post it here.

Keep a close eye on the coolant. Any bubbling / gas fumes? Misfire at start up? Losing coolant fluid in the overflow tank? White smoke out tail pipe?

Coolant is good, no bubbling or excess in overflow, no white smoke at all, not even after seafoam, and it seems like its not a constant misfire. I can turn the runner on and know right away if it's running rough or not. If I turn it on and its a smooth idle then it will stay like that for the whole trip, mind you I haven't been taking trips more then a few miles at a time so it could start to misfire if I drove it for longer. Here's the rest if the info my OBD reader shows while its misfiring. This data was taken after the truck had been on and running for only a few minutes. I work 5 minutes away from my house so I wasn't able to get a good run this morning.

OK guys, got my OEM wires in and I also ordered a TPS as well. Pulled the EFI fuse, replaced wires and sensor, reset check engine light and took her for a drive. Drove for about 20 minutes and no codes or rough idle! Let's see how she does tomorrow. May go through with the injectors and coil packs as a preventative measure (because I already ordered them) but I believe it came down to a fault wire. Here's a picture of the boots on my NGKs, can someone tell me what's going on with the one on the bottom and if I need to do anything about it. Thanks.
