Gull81's Build Thread

Hello all,

Now that I have solved the misfire mystery I am going to focus on all the stuff I want/need to do for the car. I will be moving (driving) from LA to the East coast in about a month and a half, so I want to make sure I can complete the trip. The car is a 1997 SR5 3.4L. 167k miles. I will be using this thread to solicit advice, keep track of everything, and post updates for those interested. I am not interested in off-roading or anything like that, so this may not be a very interesting thread for many.

Feel free to drop your advice below.

Major issues and jobs to do:
1) Big oil leak - Valve Cover Gaskets?
2) Timing Belt and Water Pump - Will probably take this to the shop
3) Lower ball joints (is this needed if I don't plan to off-road at all?)
4) New Tires?
5) Replace Radiator or Transmission Cooler?

Smaller Jobs:
1) Clean the IAC
2) Replace the Spark Plugs
3) Flush and Change Coolant
4) Change Transmission fluid
5) New O2 sensors
6) Seafoam in the air intake?
7) Fuel injector cleaner
8) Seafoam in the oil before the next oil change
9) New Radiator Cap
10) New Air Filter
11) Transmission treatment?
12) Replace lost 10mm bolt

Cosmetic/ Unnecessary Jobs
1) Fix broken air vents
2) Fix broken clock
3) Antena Delete Mod
4) Pull out Dents
5) Clean Engine Bay

Completed Jobs:
New Spark Plug Wires
Fixed Misfire
Replaced Radio
Cleaned MAF

Hunting down the oil leak:

As you can see - there is a big oil leak dripping down onto the cross member. I checked the valve cover bolts and they were very lose, so I am hoping that just tightening up will do the trick, but I doubt it.

What I plan to do: Clean up all the oil stains so I can see if the problem continues, what's old and what's new. I will also check all over the valve cover to see if I can spot an obvious culprit. Then, I will top off the oil. I will also be cleaning the IAC and TB at some point. During that time, I may remove the intake manifold so I can reach all the valve cover bolts to bring them to spec. If I get that far, I may as well replace the spark plugs.

I really want to avoid replacing the valve cover gaskets if I can, but I know I probably will end up doing it / having the shop do it.

Any theories on the leak or advice on my plan are welcome.
