Painting Sliders. What is the best way to go about this?
I bought some HD-SKO sliders to weld onto my Runner. I bought these in case I get into a situation I would need them. I don't plan on going down trails where I know I will need them. So they are kind of insurance more then use you could say.
I have been told I should powder coat them if they will not be used that much. Steve over at Sonoran Steel (bought though him) told me to use no primer and just spray ACE Hammered on them. So far taking his advice but want to hear other thoughts. Two of my 4Runner friends have these sliders and used the Hammered rattle can paint. Both have rock chips from highway/ dirt road use.
I think I should also sandpaper the metal so the paint has a better chance of holding up. Will steel wool #2 do the trick if I paint them with the Ace Hammered?

The method I used to paint my sliders is tack everything into place on the truck finish weld them off the truck, use a scotch bright pad to clean the metal, rubbed it down with acetone, primed then painted with semigloss black paint.
I have no experience with that hammered paint, but normally you should use primer when painting bare metal.
I also see no need to powder-coat them unless that's the look your going for. Mine have no dings, or scratches from debris hitting them, a spray can will do you just fine.

I would use an etching primer first, then several coats of the Rustoleum of your choice - I like the hammered finish too. The nice thing about rattlecanning them is you can touch them up when (not if) they get scuffed.

im my opinion, powder coating armor is a complete waste of time and money. why? well the whole point of armor is to protect your vehicle, so it will be getting scratched, scraped, dented, etc.
i like to use a semi gloss black rustoleum w no hammer finish business in it. its usually found at every store that has paint, and is always cheap. the key is making sure you let the paint cure before stepping on it. i paint mine right before i wheel, so i can see the contact they are getting..
if they are bare steel, just clean them w acetone first and make sure theres no dirt, oil, etc on them. thats really all you need to worry about. and yes, i pretty much always always use primer.
FYI, if you are planning on standing on these ever, consider matte or flat vs gloss. gloss is slippery.

Thanks for the input guys.
Going to scratch the powder coating off the list.
So this is my plan so far...
-Scrub them with some steel wool #2 so the paint sticks
-clean them with some acetone
-apply 2-3 coats of the hammered flat/gloss black with time between coats.
Will I be alright with this?

Get some "cheese cloth" ad wipe them down after the steel wool to remove any leftover particles

What I did was wipe them down really good with Denatured Alcohol, then take 320 grit sand paper and scruff them up a bit, then wipe down with denatured alcohol again.
I used the Rustoleum Professional paint and primer.
I put on a first very thin coat of primer, wait about 5 minutes then another very thin coat, 5 minutes then a decent coat, wait 10 minutes then another good final coat of primer.
Then do the same with the Black, 2-3 very thin coats then 2 or 3 decent coats.
Then use the non skid tape on the entire top.
Did mine 2 years ago, still looks like I did it a week ago.

Went to Ace and bought this stuff...
-320 grit sand paper to scuff up the sliders
-Acetone to clean them
-Rustoleum Hammered black. Seems kind of glossy but I didnot see a flat black.
Painting tonight!

My sliders are arriving on Monday from Savage. Done some extensive research here and elsewhere on what to do. One of my clients is a professional auto painter and discussed many options with me. His powder coating guy said $150. wmeredith posted a great thread on painting and installing his sliders. powder coating is brittle and will chip. I'm taking mine to the Line-X fella. He said $175 and far more durable than painting or powder coating. I have different concerns, for I live in the great salt belt. If I get chips, I will get rust. I too, don't intend on going on trails that require them (if possible), but it does happen. I only get to play in the rocks a few times a year but insurance is good.

Paint is always easy to touch up. Powder coating and spray liner looks great, but not as easy to touch up when you get some trail rash.
I prepped mine HD-SKO's with acetone, adhesive promoter from Autozone and then a few coats if Krylon satin black.
I've already got some trail rash, but no worries, a touch up of Krylon will take 2mins!

on my 94 I used the rattle can spray on bed liner stuff and it did not seem to be any stronger then regular paint, just textured. I was talking to a guy who did his utility body truck with rhino liner, that you can buy your self, and painted a enamel gloss coat over it to protect it and he said it has been on there for years with a lot of metal scraping it, and he loves it! I was thinking of buying some and doing my bumper and sliders with it!
