Battery group advice
My battery is dead and I want to upgrade. What is the biggest battery I can fit? Any links I have found are outdated.

A 27F is longer but will fit. As other batteries will. Someone even put a big battery from a Jag in one.

I have the H7 in mine. Its a group 31 equivilent just has the terminals on the right side for us since group 31 is backwards. Its about as big of battery id feel comfortable with the factory holder.
I went with autozone platinum AGM and Im not happy at all. Im glad they have a 3year warrnaty because I have already returned it once.
Ill prob just stick with normal wet battery next time.

Speaking of batteries, anyone have any feedback on their Northstar battery? I was a noob and bought an Optima for my previous 2nd Gen T4R and was happy with it but it went with the sale of the truck. I understand he perception is that the quality has dropped since they moved MFG south. Mine was also Mexican. What are people doing nowadays? I don't have a winch but I like a healthy reserve for other powered stuff and to cover my ass leaving lights on by accident or music too long.

My $0.02.
Be prepared to address some fitment issues once you go bigger than the battery shelf. That's not the end of the world and it is addressable, but if you get a longer battery or a shorter battery you want to make sure that it's still secured.
I went with a Odyssey 34R. I also purchased a Rough Stuff battery box to keep it from migrating during off-road adventures. I still need to figure out how I want to mount the battery box though.
A word of caution on size 31 batteries. They are heavy. And while there are somewhat simple tie-down solutions for them, you might be running the risk of it actually cracking defender body due to weight. Also there are some reports that they do not charge back up as fast and effectively due to its size and design spec.

I do have the CS144 alt to keep with with charging requirements.
I saw someone was mounting a H8, had a comparison to a Optima Yellotop for size comparison. I do want a AGM and a high AH battery for the house battery.

I dont think you can go much higher but you can go a little wider. It sticks out toward the engine with nothing under it. I bet you could just make a metal sheet and bolt it down so it supports the battery still.
I have 80w solar panel on the roof so that helps boost the battery back up when the suns out.
I also have the CS144. I used to have 2 optima yellows. I still have the battery tray I welded mounted if I want to run a second again. It was in the back left corner of the engine bay.

I had my 100w panel on mine when I went on my 5 month road trip. Where did you tie yours in at? I used the aux power outlet in back but at the relay it was only getting 7v.
Oh so you dont have the ABS setup in the way. I need to remove that so I can have a better battery setup.

I know there's a lot of hating on the Optimas, but I've owned two and they have been great to me. Currently have an Optima Yellow Top since I have acessories. I do also have the CS144 alternator though.
The thing about AGM's that people don't realize is that if you want them to last you need to charge them once in a while with a quality trickle charger that is made for AGM's. Since they will start just fine at lower capacity, the alternator doesn't charge them up all the way and slowly that capacity reduces if they are not re-charged back to 100%. Do that and your AGM will last a very long time as long as it's a quality brand.
To say that just because something isn't made in 'Merica means it's garbage is short sided. Almost everything we use and buy has components from outside the US or was completely made outside of the US. Never mind that your entire 4Runner was made outside of the US!

I never had a problem with my yellow top, just repeating what some people on here have said about a perceived decline in quality since Optima moved production to MX. At least they are still in North America!

I have the Northstar 27F AGM battery for a couple years now with the stock denso alternator. It has treated me good in negative winter conditions here in the Midwest
Do you recommend I switch to the CS144 w/ converter ?

Also if OP is gonna change to a bigger battery, what do you guys recommend for an "upgraded battery tray/box" ?

Not unless you have increased load when the engine is running. I switched to an electric fan that would draw up to 20 amps and it exceeded the stock alt's capacity and it died. As long as you don't hear it whirring or whining you're ok.
I do recommend a battery charger though.

Believe it or not your CS144 Alt runs at a higher voltage under all temp conditions compared to the factory Denso which helps promote a healthier AGM which require a higher charge voltage and float voltage compared to a regular battery.
With a battery temp of 86F the charge voltage needs to be around 14.5v and a float voltage of 13.7v.
So running a AGM with a stock Denso that runs between 14.0v and 13.6v and never pressing up the battery with a AGM battery charger definitely does not promote good battery health.
