fuel pump? MAF oring?
2001 Toyota 4runner SR5
Went to do some errands yesterday and got to my destination. I tried starting the truck after my errands and it runs a couple of seconds then dies. I tried again and the same thing. tried a third time and it will just crank but the engine won't start. My first assumption is a bad fuel pump. Rarely relays go bad as I read on the other forums. Just to let you know that I recently cleaned the MAF and reused the original oring. I had the hardest time trying to put the MAF back into place due to the stretched oring. You think that might be the problem as well? Need help guys. thanks in advance.
Another question, which one is the fuel pump relay? what is it called? They are marked with names but none say fuel pump.

I clean my maf sensor all the time as part of maintenance and never had an issue with reusing the o-ring. I don't think a stretched maf sensor o-ring would cause a no start issue. If anything the ltft would be high as air is getting into the stream bypassing the maf.
Can you try starter spray through the intake tube? If it starts, your engine is fuel starved.

yes i did. fuel pump maybe?
I'm planning to replace the fuel pump, filter, and check valve since I'll be dropping the tank. Do I need to remove the driveshaft to be able to drop the tank? I hope not. I've seen a video and he took the driveshaft out. I have a 2001 runner. The tank looks different from the 1997 - 2000 models.

I did my fuel pump on a 2000 runner without removing the drive shaft. Disconnect all the lines plus the electrical connector on top from under the rear driver side seat. Disconnect the fuel filler neck drop the tank. I didn't siphon the gas but you should to make the tank lighter. I Also replaced the gasket around the opening. fairly simple.
edit: you might need to disconnect the drive shaft for a 2001.

Thanks for the reply spartacus. Yup you’re right I might have to remove the driveshaft. Easier access to the lines next to the check valve and the check valve itself

Don't be too quick to assume a fuel pump failure. It's not a Honda.
Need the CEL data to see if it's throwing a sensor codes. The sensor failures that can cause a no-start issue that I'm aware of are: MAF, Crankshaft position sensor, Camshaft position sensor, Throttle Position Sensor, and a good 'ol massive vacuum leak. The fact you recently worked on the MAF makes me suspect it's the MAF.

Not the maf. Just changed the oring and same thing. No cel data. I’ll check the crankshaft, camshaft and throttle as well. Truck has 200k on it and the guy I bought it from said he hasn’t changed the fuel pump. Off topic how heavy is an empty gas tank? I’m going to do the fuel pump cause I already have all the parts to do it anyways. Might as well do it now.

The tank is not that heavy when empty. I didn't drive mine dry enough, maybe to 1/8 tank and thought I'd just syphon it out. I wasn't able to get a hose down into the tank, even small syphon hose. There is a baffle plate in the way, maybe its an anti syphon plate, anyway no go on the syphon. So so I figured I'd just pull the tank with 1/8 full. I put a floor jack under it with a piece of plywood and lowered it down. It was quite heavy with fuel still in it, probably like 6 gallons. Watch

is it possible to just detach the tank filler hose from the pipe and then siphon it that way? I have about a half tank and you say 1/8 for was quite heavy as you mentioned.

Watch Tims video on the tube. He didn't mention to take the neg cable off the battery post to do the tank drop. Do I need to take it off or I can leave it on for the job?

You can leave it on, I didn't disconnect when I changed out my fuel pump.
PS that tank is going to be pretty heavy. I would see if you can get a helper and some ratchet straps to strap it to the jack.

I Mcgeyvered a trans jack. Placed a metal plate and bolted it on to a plywood then bolted it on the jack. Pretty stable if i say so

The hose will go all the way down the filler tube so it won't matter. The hose gets hung up at the tank entrance. I confirmed the obstruction when I pulled the pump cover off.
BTW, did you ever check your EFI fuse?

is it that little 15amp fuse in the engine bay? so if that checks out then all points to fuel pump?
Is it possible to go through the fuel pump access from inside the truck to extract the fuel?
