97 4WD Transmission won't shift in 2WD

So my wife called me saying the 4Runner wouldn't shift. She drove it to get dinner but when she got in, turned it on, and put it in reverse, nothing happened. She could pull it through all the gears and nothing. When she tried to get it back in Park it started to grind.
I show up, hopped in and verify her story. With the shifter in Neutral I slowly pulled the 4x shifter into 4H. At that point the main shifter worked and we got it home in 4WD. I searched nine pages but didn't see anything related.
It's a '97 Limited 4WD with 61,000 miles. The 4Runner came from my mom and was babied. Garaged, low miles, and was never used for towing. I checked the fluid, it was full and clean.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Something to add, I just check the linkage underneath as she ran the shifter through the gears both in 4WD and with the 4X lever in neutral. The linkage appears to be working fully. The lever at the trans is turning.

No, I'm just a dumbass. The 4x shifter was in neutral. The wife must have knocked it forward getting out. Thanks and sorry to all.
