Time for a new battery - recommendations?

Let me know what you're using and if you're happy.

Thanks!
Jim

I currently have a Huge H7 platinum duralst AGM. Not very happy with it so far. I was able to swap one under warranty already. It does have 3 years so thats something.

Before this I had 2 Optima Yellowtops( I got them cheap). I was very happy with them since they lasted 8years of heavy use and being drained down to 11v multiple times by my 12v frides and inverters but still started everytime.

Im not sure if I would go AGM again. I might just go largest normal battery I can find. Im not sure the cost is justified since it doesnt get you more AH.

I'm the same way in terms of AGM. I've had 2 yellow tops in my Supra and even with lots of trickle charging, they just don't last. I was thinking of an Interstate as I remember lots of good feedback but I've never owned one.

I put one of these in last Sept. Very happy with it. Handled single digit cold in Flag last December and our crazy high temps with nary a problem. This is a NorthStar battery, but with a 5 year full replacement vice 4 years from NorthStar.

X2Power Premium AGM Battery for 2001 Toyota 4Runner V6 3.4L 585CCA Car and Truck - SLI24FAGMDP at Batteries Plus Bulbs

My cost was about $270 AR. No rebates now and discount code is not as good and it is a pricey battery, but it was easy decision for me, especially with the 5 year warranty.

Good luck,

Eddie

Currently have a Optima Yellow Top. The power capacity of this battery blows out of the water any lead acid battery I've ever owned. Funny, one guy said he won't go AGM again, I'll never buy a lead acid again lol! It's all personal preference I suppose.

Whatever battery you do buy, but it from Advance Auto online: https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/. They run sales of 25% or more off, I've saved over $70 on a battery purchase before. Got some parts on a 35% sale once too. Batteries are pricey enough that they qualify for free shipping and you can get your core charge back by dropping the old battery off at a CarQuest or Advance store.

Everyone has different luck with AGM's! That's awesome that you've had such good luck with yours.

My car sits a lot which probably doesn't help, so maybe it's worth another try?

Rural King has the best price in town on car batteries. Their house brand is made by Exide (says so right on the label).

Unless you're dealing with vibration related failures, or doing something that requires an exotic mounting position, don't waste your money on AGM.

I'm using an Exide 24F from Home Depot, was on sale for about $100 after core. It has a 3 or 4-year warranty but I just discovered Exide filed for bankruptcy this past Monday. Never had an issue with it.

My 4th-gen has been sitting and the 27F (slightly wider and higher capacity) Bosch-branded Pep Boys battery died, no hassle getting it replaced under warranty but the new one died about a year later...they wouldn't warranty the replacement and was supposed to give me a $10 refund, which I haven't received. I had another dead 24F laying around and spent $50 on Pep Boys' cheapest line, it only has a 1-year warranty but I'll be wiring a trickle charger to it. I'll probably core exchange the dead Bosch on another $50 battery for a solar-charged outdoor lighting idea.

Isn’t the yellow top a group 31 size battery?

The old I bought was a group 35. I know there's other sizes that fit.

I guess I’ll say this. I spent years fressing over AGM or stay with the standard flooded battery.

I decided to stay with a flooded battery instead of an AGM.

Why? Because I never found an AGM battery that equaled the specs of a flooded battery. And the AGM costs twice as much.

I’ve never had an interstate last less than 6 years.

I stay with Johnson control batteries as they make batteries as good as Yuasa and panasonic in Japan

Walmart sells Everstart MaXX batteries amde by Johnson control and I get FULL 5 years + service for past 10 years on all of my Toyotas.

I have 24F batteries on the 4Runner and 2000 Land Cruiser.
