3rd gen fat lip question

Does anyone know if the fat lip bumper helps if you get into an accident or is it just cosmetics?

There is a bumper reinforcement bar that mounts to the front frame rails on the fat lip, that is not there on the earlier bumpers. Not sure though how much actual extra strength it adds

Aftermarket bumpers aren't really made to help during an accident. You can reinforce some of them to help if you need to use your vehicle to push vehicles like CHP vehicles. But if you hit something with significant force it comes down to how your overall vehicle has been designed to help you survive the impact. After all in a frontal impact something has to give and no matter what bumper you install it will be damaged and with enough impact so will other significant parts of the vehicle.

If it's a light kiss the fat lip will save you money. I have been in two soft (no air bag) collisions (neither my fault) and that bumper extension absorbed the bulk of the damage. It folded in on itself as apparently designed. I got away with cheap parts from Certafit and good as new. Without the lip, I am sure airbags would have gone off and more parts were needed.

I too have had a couple moderate impacts (no airbag) and no damage, just bounces off whatever - paint intact.

I remember in th 80s US cars were required to have "5 MPH" bumpers, I was in my teens then, so those bumpers really helped, though sometimes the shocks they used busted but bumpers were 'saved'.

Not trying to hijack the thread but apparently I don't have permission to start my own thread yet, would anyone by chance be selling a winch number for a 3rd gen in the Phoenix area??
