The 3rd Gen All Questions Allowed Thread
I was replacing the front brake hoses and ran into a weird issue. Here’s what both hoses looked like after 270K.
A fitting on one of the new hoses wouldn’t seat into the backing plate that the spring clip goes into. The fitting just didn’t seem to be machined right. Had to back to the store to exchange it, and the next one was fine.
It was a centric brand hose. Ive only replaced a handful of brake hoses over the years and am wondering if this is common?

I'm planning on heading down to Autozone again today to get a code. Haven't started the truck yet today though so maybe the CEL is off again. Thankfully PO was pretty good about regular maintenance. He did the CAT, O2 sensor, and radiator all within the last year. Not too sure what could be going on with my truck but hopefully once I have a code I'll be able to nail down a solution.
I'll surely be back for more help once I know the code!

like @ Endlessbockdes said a torque app and obd-II scanner would make life easier.

Getting Roadtrip Ready
Hello everyone!
Quick question. I'm planning on driving from St. George, UT to Boulder, CO this summer - about 650 miles. I recently bought a 2000 4Runner and I want to make sure it's ready to do the drive. The timing belt, radiator, water pump, etc. have all been replaced within the last ~30k.
The main thing I'm worried about is my valve cover gasket. It's seeping currently and I can smell oil burning when I turn off the car most times. Is that something I should take care of before my trip?
Please let me know anything else I should make sure to check/know about these trucks on roadtrips!
Pete

I wouldn't say it's exactly pertinent or required for the trip but you should definitely address it sooner than later. It's certainly not a hard job, a little time consuming if you're by yourself and/or dont have experience doing the job, but not hard whatsoever. Valve cover leaks are incredibly common on these vehicles so it's not something to fret over.
SOMETIMES you can get by with tightening the valve cover a bit more, but this is a horrible habit to get into and something you should not do frequently at all.

some add'l things to review, in no particular order:
engine oil and filter change unless you'll be within your maintenance window by the time you're back
in case the 'etc.' above does not include rear differential gear oil, transmission and transfer case gear oils and so on, make sure you do those since who knows when they were last done
tires in good shape, rotated and balanced, properly inflated
air filter
wiper blades (at least front, but also rear if it's there and works) and washer fluid
lower ball joints wouldn't be a bad move, unless you know they are recent
grease the driveshafts
my $0.02 on the valve cover gasket leak: be extremely careful if you are going to check the bolt tightness. if you suspect there's a very localized leak, see how the associated bolt(s) feel using a nut driver and very gentle torque. we're talking inch-pounds for these and over-torquing is really really bad, cringeworthy. there are lots of threads and vids about this, including torque specs.

Hi all, just picked up a 99 Limited and the hvac is possessed. The display will blink the normal information, but it seems like it's in "demo" mode where it will start at option 0 or 1, then proceed up to 7 or so. So basically it switches between hot, cold, fan speed, and direction of flow (defroster, dash, feet) all on it's own. Is there a control module for this thing or do I need to call a young priest and an old priest? TIA

When I got mine, the Ultragauge MX 1.4 was the one that you can add the trans temp to. It appears to be $10 more than the basic model. Still, the prices have actually dropped since i got mine - what a world!
From their site:
UltraGauge MX v1.4 $91.32
Save: 15% off
The UltraGauge MX v1.4 has all the features as described on our main page, except that the MX has the added ability to access non-standard manufacturer specific gauges, such as transmission temperature (if supported by the vehicle)
Please note that the MX v1.4 does not contain the added features found on the UltraGauge EM Plus.
The display looks better than these crappy photos, but the SEX T4R is trans temp (you can call it whatever you want in 6 characters). The second shot is the code you input to add the gauge. There are several posts here on T4R that i used to find the codes needed to add the trans temp to the device. There are many pages of data screens on these things - this is just one layout. Some people will prefer the BT/phone app as it probably looks better. I just like the old school dedicated gauge.

Thanks so much, that was going to be my next question what the programming was.

I was concerned about that too when I ordered. 'Tacoma' should be fine and I don't believe 3rd Gens used the (Tundra) CAN protocol at all. It turns out the the gauge will choose the correct protocols and even when you do a full factory reset (no pre-programming) like i did on mine a couple of times it still works fine. These things are pretty fool-proof (registered Fool here), so don't stress over it. The things are almost frustratingly basic - a refreshing throwback or an annoyance - your choice. To me, real ECU data for engine and trans temps are priceless. The dash gauge is worthless until it's too late. There are threads on here somewhere that document the process to add trans temps that I followed and then I repeated them in another thread and they worked for that person.....can't find them at first glance.

You need to have the auto climate control rebuilt. There's a guy on the forum that rebuilds them: Auto Climate Control Repair Services It worked wonderfully for mine.
