Does anyone have the part number for the original style rear diff breather? The extension mod is so popular that I can't find it anywhere. I'm not interested in doing the mod, I just want to drop in a replacement and go.

For 4th gen its 90930-03031, I believe. May be same for 3rd gen.

Sort of a fun question: Does anyone know what is wrong when only the rear lights and center diff light flash when the AWD/multimode is pressed in on a 2002 4Runner? The front two wheels do not illuminate at all. 4LO and center diff in 4LO work just fine.

While I work on getting out of newbie jail I have a brief question. This will likely end in my own thread but for now this will get me going.

Is there a casting/part number on the rear axle housings? Im trying to figure out if my 3rd gen has a 2nd gen rear axle housing... Is there any way to identify?

It means one of the lights in the gauge cluster has burned out. Pretty easy to replace. There are a few threads on doing LED swaps for the gauge cluster that have good write-ups on disassembling the dash and pulling the cluster.

The lights light up when in 4LO and don't flash. Same with 4LO with center diff lock. This only happens when trying to get into multimode and 4HI. I will definitely look into that for the future. There is also no corresponding transfer case sound for 4HI, just flashing rear lights and center diff lights. Hoping its just a sensor, solenoid or something like that.

Should be able to fit 35x12.5's on stock wheels with no problem

Your 3rd gen definitely does not have a 2nd gen rear axle housing, unless you have reason to believe the previous owner did extensive modifications to fit one which wouldn’t really make any sense

Can I fit those with a 3 inch ome lift? I like the look of the stock rims so I am trying to keep them with the max size I can run.

Not without lots of clearancing. 285/75R16's will fit but will rub when flexed or turning full lock. 255/85R16's will clear a little better than 285's.

Thank you. There aren't any 2nd gens around me that I can take a look at the axle so I wasn't sure how much different they were. 10 or so years ago me and my father were fighting axle seals. We replaced them a few times and kept having them go out. Dad got mad, took it to a shop. They replaced them twice and had failures. Finally on their third time they started measuring.

From what my father remembers they told him they discovered that the axle housing was now from a '97 because their measurements indicated they needed 2.d gen seals. My father thought they said they used seals for a '93. All I know is they are still going strong. I just wasn't sure what to believe.

Fast forward to today I am worried I have a bearing going out in the rear diff. Before I start buying parts or shopping for a locking 3rd member I wanted to ensure I didn't have a 2nd gen axle/3rd member or other gremlins that may pop up.

I have no clue if seals from a 93 would work or not, but I can pretty much guarantee the axle isn’t a 93 or any 2nd gen. A lot of times people install a new updated seal design available from Toyota without flipping the retainer on the axle shaft and verifying that the seal rides on the correct section of the retainer so they end up leaking. Lots of people also just throw in a new seal and it works but I’d bet these new seals weren’t riding on the retainer properly and that caused the leaks

suspension refresh

Apologies if this horse has been beaten to death, just don't want to miss anything. I've searched and think I have it covered, just want to check one last time.

I have some time off between now and end of year and I'm going to tackle the front suspension. 98 with 153k. 2wd. All the front end components appear to be original except for the shocks/struts which I did 2 years ago. Plan is to complete

LBJ's and castle nuts (OE)
ITRE's (OE) and OTRE (Duralast)
Steering rack bushings (Energy Suspension)
UCA bushings (OE)
LCA Bushings (Whiteline)
Sway bar links/bushings (Duralast)

Pay close attention to get everything close enough to get to shop for alignment.

Any feedback/items I'm missing greatly appreciated. Thanks!
