The 3rd Gen All Questions Allowed Thread

This thread has slowly turned into a question thread, which I feel this forum is in need of. Feel free to come in and ask any questions you need to rather than starting a new thread. Below is what I started with:

Original Post-

Hello all, I would like to apologize in advance for this thread being made if it bothers anybody or if its is in the wrong section.

I only did it because after vast research in this forum and others there are not many "clear" threads on this topic. I think that what I am planning lift wise is a much better option than that of a front a rear spacer lift.

I would also like to get lower ball joints, where is the "best cheapest" place to order from ? lol

I come new to this forum from Tacomaworld. I have owned my 1st gen Tacoma for over 2 years now and have done vast's amounts of maintenance and upgrades to the engine, interior, exterior and suspension.

I have currently purchased Bilstein 5100 struts for the front of my 2000 4runner, and have purchased rough country 5100 shocks for the rear as well. I do not plan to do any wheeling or much extreme off-road driving. I purchased it because the dad life has caught up to me finally. Anyway after my math for both front and rear shocks/struts plus the rear spacer it is right under 500 bucks. After all my research this is for sure the "best cheap" lift anyone could possibly piece together. Or did I miss something out in the interwebs?

I would like to achieve a 2.5" front/ 2" rear lift on my 4runner just as I have on my Tacoma. The only difference is that on my Taco I have n3 extended struts up front and n3 extended shocks in the rear.
I have nothing but great things to say about these RC suspension components. Very comfortable considering I am running 2 inch rear supreme suspension blocks in the rear. The fronts are lifted 2.5" shocks that utilize the factory spring to get you said 2.5 inch lift up front.

Finally to get to my questions. I am on a budget . I plan to run the front Bilstein 5100's my factory front springs at the 2.5" setting. For the rear I plan to do a supreme suspension rear lift spacer to pair with the extended rear 5100 shocks.

Is it a bad idea to run the front Bilstein 5100's at the highest setting with factory springs? Will it get me the desired 2.5 inch lift up front?

Also for the rear what size spacer must I purchase in order to get said 2 inch lift in the rear?

The goal is to purchase 285/75/r16 Achilles X-MT (great/quiet underrated M/T) tires and want it to sit close to the way my Tacoma sits (minus the 17 inch wheel). Pic below to illustrate.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Exactly how much of a budget?

I’d spend the $200 and get a set of OME 890’s or 906’s for the rear rather than put in a spacer.
If you want 2” lift with a spacer, then you’d need a 2” spacer.

I think you’ll probably run into much more spending when you tear into a 20 year old rig. Most all the rubber will be shot. Stuff will be worn and rusty.
OEM lower ball joints will run you another $200.

I think what you are proposing can be done.

As far as ball joints I have a set of OEM lower balljoints on the list. Want to buy today.

GENUINE OEM TOYOTA 96-02 4RUNNER RIGHT & LEFT FRONT LOWER BALL JOINT SET OF 2 | eBay

Is there anywhere one can get them cheaper?

Was wondering if anyone could tell me if these are the best route to go with. Everywhere I read OEM seems to be the only mentioned route. I have done MOOG in the past with other automobiles but with the way that Toyota engineered these suckers it seems that they must have been high and fudged that area up making it one of the weakest points on the "indestructable" 4runner.

Yes on this item. only go toyota...I have used Moog and others for other cars and other parts and have not had issues...but this is the big turd in the 4runner suspension...thats why many say use only toyota...and thats what I did. However I did have a neighbor who had Moog ball joints on his 4runner and they lasted several years b4 he sold it...but it rarely rarely left pavement.

you can actually get them cheaper from a real toyota dealer like McGeorge or Camelback. Both offer free shipping. Often McGeorge has been cheaper for me on most stuff. Then you dont have to worry about counterfeit. There have been threads of people on ebay and amazon...showing original packages ....saying OE and end up getting fakes...so at same price or less than why not go direct to a toyota dealer ?
Some say to also get the mounting bolts....some reuse. I got new myself but know several who have not with no problems.

hey discount available. just remembered....that will make it cheaper still
I got to get going so cant look it up....its either enter toyota worlds coupon info or taco world or something like that and get another 10% off at camel back I think.
and of course if you got time to wait there is aryanna...

sorry you will have to look them both up or someone else will chime in...sorry got to run.
If nobody kicks in the answer...I can try when I get back from fishing late tonight.

lastly some toyota dealers will match online prices...just got to take a print out of the info from camel back etc. Call first to see if they will to save time and frustration. My local dealer will NOT...they have a real market here.

He means amayama.com. Or partsouq.com, also a great source of OEM parts.

Correct. Just beware the long shipping times.

I emailed my guy Jesse Streeter from jessestreeter.com to see what prices he can get me. He has been importing me 180sx parts for the last 10 years. A lot of the time he can get those low prices and ship them to me in the fraction of the time. When he gets back to me I will see if it will be better to order from him or Amanaya. I will also let you all now if the deals and shipping time are better.

Actually it's less - the shipping for two LBJ's is only a little more than for one.

179.41 shipped for both, but no other shipping option than surface (sea fright I am sure).

I have been importing 240sx parts from Japan for years for my personal vehicle and to resale in the s chassis world and sea freight is always at least 6 to 8 weeks to arrive.

I was able to find them here for 105 a pop.

after shipping and tax plus 10% off shipping code: (CB10) = $232.52 that hurt. Better than dying from a failing 250k mile old lbj I guess.....lol

Guess the budget has to go up from all my research.

The fronts again I plan to run at 2.5 inch setting

Id like the rig leveled.

So rear wise; With OME springs what is the best option for that leveling? 890's show to provide a 3inch lift, but then 906's only show a 2' lift. Is there a spring that is in the in-between mark at a real solid 2-2.5?

Id hate to do a 2 inch spring in the rear and it be lower than 2 inch with a full tank and the kid and wife in the backseat and that dreaded overtime eventual sag of the spring. I am leaning towards the 890s and hope that it is leveled with the front 5100s with factory springs set at 2.5 is even with the rear.

Sorry for the newbness. All replies and help much appreciated .
