Tried to re charge my AC.

I went to charge my AC got it in the green and ambient temp. I than went to turn on the AC and got a burning smell and strange noise. I’m thinking the AC Compressor Clutch is Bad? Couldn’t handle the re charge?

Not much to go on there. Is the system still holding a charge? Is the clutch engaging? It's likely the clutch is blown on the compressor if she was running low for a long time. The clutch cycles a lot when the refrigerant is low and burns up. Eventually it runs low enough that the pressure switch keeps it from coming on at all. Then when you recharge it, the load on the clutch is too much and it won't engage because the magneto is burnt out from all the extreme cycling from low refrigerant. Ask me how I know....

Assume you charged from one of those auto store cans???

Everyone of those I’ve done you charge while the AC is running on high and check the pressure often.

Not sure I understand your comments. Was the AC running fine while you charged, or were you using a commercial AC unit?

Try it again. You may have slugged the compressor with liquid. Is the compressor clutch engaging? Really need a set of gauges to do anything on an AC system especially diagnosing any kind of issue with it.

Possibly overcharged it and the compressor head pressure is causing it to lock up and fry the belt.

I also think there's a chance you overcharged it. This video I made on this subject with @infamousRNR is long but I believe very informative for those that would like to learn about the AC system on their rig and how to recharge it.

I think you’re right. It has high mileage so it was time. I have had two other Toyota’s AC compressors go bad but never smoked.

So my A/C has been nearly throwing out ice cubes for years But it does cycle.

Haven't measured it but it will run about a minute then be off for about 20 then back on, again it is incredibly cold even in 100+ weather after just 5-10 minutes.

Should I worry or have it checked out? Thanks.

If it's not broke.. dont fix it. The AC compressors will cycle just not all the time.

Wise man. You notice a constant cycling vs the occasional cycling.

Just throw the gauges and make sure everything is within spec. It takes 2 minutes to hook up the gauges and check the pressures.

Please don't use those damn cans, they ruin your system. The system needs to be drained out and a vacuum pulled. Then it can be properly recharged and re-oiled at the correct pressure.
