Timing Belt

2001 To-Yoda 4runner SR5 204K miles

The previous owner has no idea if he did a timing belt. Is there a way to check if the belt is good for another so miles? I'm still in the process of buying the parts for it. I have the Belt and the Pump so far. I heard from one of my pals that I could remove the top portion of the belt cover to inspect if it's still in good condition. You would think at 204K miles that maybe he did do a belt job when it was at 100k or so right? Well just to be sure I want to inspect the belt. So is there a way? Has anyone had this situation before? Thanks in advance.

you can slide the compression clip off of the top radiator hose take the spark plug wire clips of the timing cover loosen the 12mm bolts slide the timing cover forward and check the belt you can also rotate the crank pulley bolt clockwise and check the belt.

This is what I would do. You can easily inspect the timing belt this way. Make sure the seal on the top part of the timing cover is good.

Alot of us would just change the belt along with other maintenance that way we have a clean record of everything and can insure it was done correctly. Changing all fluids including the transfer case and diffs and checking the LBJ to verify that it s solid would be a decent start.

Sounds good Spartacus. I will inspect using this method, since it’s my daily driver, I want to ensure the belt is good for another 5k miles til I get the rest of the parts. On a budget so it’ll take sometime yikes. Thanks again

If you are looking to do it in the near future don't worry about checking it just get the parts together and do it in a timely manor.

The engine is non-interference, so the worst case is getting stranded. Have your AAA membership topped up. Well, that's a good idea with a 20 year old vehicle anyway.

Yup I have AAA and its a must. I got stuck just recently after my fuel pump went out after doing errands. Good to have AAA

another good thing is that the engine is non-interference, although it'll be messy trying to get the old wound up and binded belt off
