Side Mirror Comparison ('99 vs '00)

Went to make a lane change yesterday and noticed I have two different side view mirrors.

My 2000 had the driver door replaced by the previous owner. I never bothered to look up the VIN etched on the glass until today when I noticed the side mirrors are different. My driver mirror is a from a '99 and the passenger mirror is the updated 2000+ design. I couldn't find this info elsewhere on here so I thought it would be interesting to compare the two designs. They are actually pretty different.

The purpose of the redesign was to improve wind noise so its not surprising to see that the older design is much more square and blocky.

Front view, 99 on top

The top corner closest to the window is what I finally noticed after driving this thing for the last few years. It has a much larger radius. The top edge, outside edge, and two outside corners appear to remain largely the same. The chamfered corner near the window is much larger on the updated design. I have not taken measurements but anecdotally id say any difference in mirror surface area is negligible.

Rear view, 99 on top

From the rear you can see how much smoother the surface is of the updated design. The top corner closest to the window is cut much more aggressively than the old design. It does not look like they touched the mount on the door.

The updated design surely has less drag and makes less noise overall but it probably also directs the air in a more favorable way

Makes you wonder if Toyota was running CFD to test this or if they just tried a bunch of different designs until they were satisfied.

Good post! There are actually three versions of the side mirrors - the '96-98 (which didn't have heaters), the '99 (which was the same shape as the '96-98 but was available with heaters), and the '00-02 (which were the new shape and available with heaters).

When I was upgrading my '97 to heated mirrors, I was torn between the '00+ and the '99 versions; in the end, I liked the looks of the '99 better on my truck.

That limited my junkyard searches quite a bit - a single year ('99), in white. Took forever, but I finally found a matching set .

Good to know! I wish I liked the 2000+ look more since it is probably better overall but the older design really looks better. Grated it took three years to notice... I’ll probably casually search for a 2000 driver side mirror just so it’s correct for the year and quieter.

This is an interesting post because I am thinking about adding indicator lights to my side view mirrors, maybe with turn signal function like modern cars, and I was getting ready to dig into my mirrors...

@4Runner4Leon is there room to add some wiring to the loom/harness in the non-heated '99 mirror

Well now I’ll be looking for black 99 mirrors to have the heat option. It’s annoying having to scrape the mirrors.

Are you sure yours are unheated? I thought only the base model mirrors were unheated.

In my case, since I had the non-heated 3-wire mirrors, I had to run the two additional wires for ground and 12V heat, all the way from under the dash, through the door accordion thingie, and up the door to the mirror connector. But I suspect that your '99 will already have the mirrors with the 5-pin connectors, and I think the wiring might be in place even if you do indeed have non-heated mirrors.

If you want to make mods inside the mirror, I think it's pretty hard to fully disassemble the mirror from its base, and run new wires. I know I broke some parts along the way when I was experimenting, but I forget now what broke.

If I recall, the '00+ mirrors were much easier to work with; the mirror part just pops out if you pry on it. The pre-'00s were more difficult.

Maybe I can take some measurements. The new ones may actually be a little taller.

They're almost identical in size.

Dang! I wish I had seen this yesterday. I went early to the pick and pull because they had a '99 limited metallic silver and I grabbed the driver side mirror off of it because mine has a chip broken off the housing. D'oh! Oh well maybe now I'll have to pull off the passenger side so they match. What a crazy coincidence you mention this.

What about taking "part B" and swapping it onto the "old" "part A" from my picture?

I do think they are different, but I can't say that for sure. I had my hands on like 15 of these mirrors, but now that I think of it, I never tried swapping bases. Let me look at my old photos and see what I can find.

...anyone want to trade a 2000 desert dune driver side mirror for a 99?

Glad this thread was of some interest!

So did all '99-'02's come standard with heated mirrors or was it optional? My driver side has a few rock chips. Would hate to swap with another one and find out it doesn't have the heated element.
