Some questions:
  • How do they ride?
  • Did you extend the bumpstops?
  • Do the coils get too loose at full droop?
  • Do you have any photos?

See I thought the 890's were a "3 inch lift" set. I was thinking about getting the 4runner 5100s but I didn't want to top out the shocks so the time. Or will it be fine?

Oh do you have the trd coils? I have 880's and the ride is too stiff. I was probably going to swap to 3rd gen 5100s
Yes, TRD front coils.

The 890s together with the stock conical bump stops will initially give a 3" lift but will sag to about 2.5" after a week. if you want a 3" lift with the 890's you'll need to add a top spacer.

If you go off-road with a 3" lift, there's a big chance you'll over-extend the 4Runner rear shocks

Really? Well that makes me feel a bit better... So it sounds like 3rd gen 5100s all the way around may be the best path. By chance do you recall what the stock hub to fender measurement is so I can calculate what lift I have in the rear currently?

Also, do you have the 3rd gen 5100s yourself?

for the 4WD versions, the stock height varies over the years and also on the options available on the vehicle (the lesser the options the lighter the truck is, the taller is the truck). the tallest were the 1999-2000 MY as they were 1" taller than the 1996-1998 MY. The 2001-2002 MY were know as the low-riders as they were about 1" lower than the 1996-1998 MY. The stock front ranges from 20" to 20.5" while the stock rear ranges from 20.5" to 21" for the 1996-1998 MY.

No, I'm using OME Sport shocks front and rear.

Gotcha, well I think I should be able to figure it out with that info.

Also, I saw a pair of icon shocks, the VS 2.0 set for like 319.99 on wheelers. Says good up to 2.5" but doesn't give the compressed/extended measurements.

Any opinion on these?

- I've been really happy with the ride. I haven't done any wheeling in a while because of other stuff going on, but recently did a few trails and thought they handled great, but did get a squeak in the back from something that I haven't located.
- I did not extend the bumps, but looking to do that soon.
- I can't say if I've gone full droop, but haven't lost a coil yet. I still have the stock isolators installed on top of the coils.
- Here's a pic after install. Previous owner had a spacer lift that I can't even to describe how happy I was to throw those away.

Sorry, not familiar with the Icons. perhaps you can request the technical specs from Icon?

Yeah that's what I was going to do, but I was hoping that somebody here and perhaps could comment on their ride.
