Need info on proper CATs for 2000 Limited Exhaust

My 4runner has the 2 cat system. I'm guessing it was set up for CA even though it was bought here in PA. Anyways, rust has destroyed the flanges and I've had the code for the front sensor for a while. It is a spare vehicle that's been sitting and needs the safety inspection done. Rockauto appears to have 2 different sets of CATs for it. One set is C. A. R. B. and the other isn't. They lower prices ones are made by Eastern. Since I don't live in CA, do I need to still bolt on the C. A. R. B. units? Will it cause problems if I get the non-CA compliant? They cost quite a bit more. I plan on buying the Denso sensor since the rear worked out good. Thanks!

The pipes between the non-CARB and CARB cat systems are mechanically different. Is the non-CARB approved option you are considering meant to bolt in place of the CARB system?

Thanks jjf8. Did you have any gasket issues between the Eastern Cat and muffler pipe? That looks just like what I was going to do actually. I am planning on buying the Walker muffler and pipe locally at Advance.

I bought the walker cats and they bolted right up on my rig. Walker 53616 & 52399. Amazon’s part finder says they don’t fit so you have to use Walker’s part finder. I installed the whole Walker system plus Denso sensors back in 2017 and they’re still going. Be sure to spay the walker parts with some high temp paint. They have a tendency to rust quick.

Edit: looks like the second cat has a different part number on the ‘02 vs the ‘00. Here’s the parts list...

You do not need the CARB cats unless you are planning to smog your vehicle in CA. You run just about any cat that will fit/weld in place without a CARB certification.

CARB cats do not have different pipes only a CARB Executive order stamped/etched certification on the cat and a (California) premium price that is required by the smog technician to input for smog.

I replaced my cats with Magnaflow CARB certified and verified with MF that there is no difference in build other that the certification. Hope this helps.
