Thanks for the reply. I guess that you're in AK... what do they treat the roads with there in the winter? Here in NY they have a solution/Salt mix they spray down which is basically Acid it melts and dissolves everything it comes in contact with and if it doesn't melt your under carriage it will crack your windshield if you get too close to truck spitting this stuff out.
I could do without state inspection too.. or the Fee.. It's a grab for the Govt yeah, we all know that..

It depends on what part of alaska a person is in. We are too far inland from any direction to haul salt or salt solutions so if they do anything, its fine crushed gravel. They even rarely do that on the roads, leave it just hard packed snow, and you better have good snow tires and know how to drive on ice..... but stores etc will gravel thier parking lots. You rarely see the pavement up here from november to march. However if your near the ocean then yes they can use salt. You can tell the difference in cars up here , as where they came from....coastal cities or inland....rust or no rust.
Inspections...yep glad we dont have them, did not in rural Oregon either ( where I am originally from) but that can be a double edge sword. I see lots of cars, here and Oregon, that should not be on the road, non working lights, bald tires, puking so much smoke...sure its that owners rights I guess...but my safety too when they dont have lights or brakes or slide like crazy in rain or snow. I maintain my cars..so glad I dont have the government telling me what to do every few years with my 4runner. Plus we can make mods and not worry about it. However the troopers can write tickets for unsafe cars...but I think they rarely do, they are spread so thin up here they dont mess with it
