Pricing questions

Drove by the local bank and saw a silver 99 4runner Sr5 4x4 with the for sale sign on. Quick inspection showed some minor scratches, no rust on the body and very minor rusts on the frame, mainly along the seams.
Drove great, slight shakes at 70-75mph
Leaky valve covers
Need tires
Abs light is on (need brakes?)
112k miles
Timing belt was done at 97k miles
Everything works, even the antenna.
I’ve have about five third gen 4runner to date, this one for some reasons drove so quiet, even at 80mph.
Anyway, the car belong the banks manager son. He bought a truck so he selling it. Price, he thinking $8-9k.
As soon as I heard the price I slowly back away and tell them I’ll think about it.
What do the people of T4r think it worth? Thank you for you time

Seems a little high IMO. If it didnt have any of the problems you described Id consider it. I bought mine stock at 200k miles with no issue for 6k in SoCal. What people think their 3rd gen is worth vs what it is actually worth usually very greatly. Lot of people would say i overpaid but i was happy to pay that price for the excellent condition everything was in.

But the miles are pretty low. If you have the money or the time to fix the issues I would definitely consider it. Seems like the guy is flexible with the price. Maybe come to him with a lower price in cash and see what he says. Could even ask him to have all the issues fixed and get new tires on it and id say the asking price is fair considering the miles.

IMO 8k is high even with only 100k on it. If you have owned multiple 3rd gen T4R than you are use to the wobble/shake at 70-80 mph (might need new rotors). I needed a new catalyst right around 150k (OEM catalyst is really pricey but you can go aftermarket significantly cheaper). I’m impressed that the antenna still works.
Personal opinion is it’s probably more in the $5-6k range. Higher price could be a little sentimental, I tear’d up when I had to say goodbye to mine.

I feel like that price point is a bit high, given the issues that you had listed.
Couple of things:
Low mileage is very a very appealing thing, so remember that you may not find another with that low mileage and condition. You may find something way better if you wait, or, you might not. Who knows. Stuff goes up on the market all the time.
I can't say I'd spend that kind of money on it, given the issues you listed. But, maybe if the current owner gets all of those things taken care of, and comes down about $1000-1500, I'd probably be all over it. Low mileage gets me every time, so I would want to pull the trigger on it. But, it has to have everything fixed and for the right price. I think you could negotiate a bit and get to where you wanna be as far as pricing goes.
As far as the issues addressed, none of them are unrealistic fixes, so its easy to get or have that work done and be all set. It's not like it has a blown motor and needs a swap, needs a new trans or has frame rust/damage, etc etc.
Also, with as low mileage as it has, IMO, it's the perfect platform for a nice, decked out build (if that's the route you wanna take it). Lots of life ahead of it as long as you keep up with it.
Maintenance records to come with it? Carfax? Any accidents, anything like that?
I'm interested to see where this goes!

I guess the market has spoken, called back yesterday and the 4runner was sold for full asking price. Not sure if that’s $8k or $9k

Oh well, on to the next one

I get the impression that nice clean lower mileage ones have bottomed out on depreciation and have been heading upward again. They tend to get used, and eventually (especially wif given little maintenance) used up. So the supply of decent ones is starting to get a little thin. And if you like a 3rd gen, the 4th gen isn't an automatic thing to move to.

Look at some of the prices unusually clean and low mile 3rd gens have been fetching on Bring a Trailer.

Toyota 4Runner For Sale - BaT Auctions

This one is obviously a unicorn - 5K miles, COME ON! But still, it's a plain old 6 cylinder automatic 4WD: 5k-Mile 1996 Toyota 4Runner SR5 for sale on BaT Auctions - sold for $43,000 on May 15, 2020 (Lot #31,485) | Bring a Trailer
Manual trans, 57K miles: One-Family-Owned 57k-Mile 1997 Toyota 4Runner 5-Speed for sale on BaT Auctions - sold for $24,000 on April 9, 2020 (Lot #29,992) | Bring a Trailer

This eventually happens with popular but high production cars. It takes a few decades, but eventually there aren't that many left, but people still want them.

Price depends greatly on the local market. In the Seattle area that sounds like a $8-10k 4Runner depending on specific condition and issues.
