Tundra Brake Upgrade - Ordering parts online

All the main auto parts stores in my area are offering online only discounts.

15% off and $50 coupon, 20% off etc...

I am wanting to do the brake upgrade but the website information is SO vague. I want the 231mm but can't find enough info to garauntee thats why im getting. If i choose 2005 Tundra am i garaunteed to get the larger brakes or were 199mm and 231mm both offered depending on the trim package? Ive read BFAD's hard to find info thread, looked on YT and google and i can't find any info that matches up with what is listed online.

If you select 2005, you'll be fine -- the 199mm was only offered through 2002.5 model year. 2002.5+ were all 231mm.

I got most of my gear from Advance Auto ONLINE ONLY, because they were offering like 20% off, or $30 off of $75, $50 off of $100 or something like that. I ended up doing like 6 orders (To Save $$$) for my entire Tundra 13WL brake upgrade and ended up spending around $300 and I got the more expensive of everything. I went with Wagner ThermoQuiet Ceramic brakes, etc.

I HIGHLY suggest doing it this way, you'll end up paying like $275-$330 for the entire job, for name brand parts and new equipment.

Here are some PROMO codes, use these upon checkout online at AdvanceAutoparts.com
Advance Auto Parts Coupons: Get $30 Off w/ 2013 Coupon Codes, Promo Code

The ones I used:
P20 - 20% off Entire Order
HUGE30 - $30 off of Orders $90+
HUGE50 - $50 off of Orders $175+

MY PERSONAL FAVORITE:
A124 - $10 Off $30 or $25 Off $70 or $40 Off $110 orders.

These codes work for EVERYTHING needed to do the brake upgrade. As far as I have used it, and known, they do NOT work with any Engine oils/oil filters. Advance usually has sales on their oil so the promos don't work.

For Parts:
Use, like an above poster said, FOR 231mm - the 2005 Toyota Tundra SR5 (4WD/2WD Doesnt matter) - Front Left/Right Calipers, Rotors, and Pads. (Most often times, depending on brands, the calipers and pads come with hardware, like the "M" clips and such.)

If you want the 199mm - Ask for a 2002 Toyota Tundra SR5 (4WD/2WD Doesnt matter) - Front Left/Right Calipers, Rotors, and Pads. (This is because in '05, they upgraded all Tundras to the 231mm, due to issues with towing.)

ENJOY!!!

B4 Disc. After Disc.
Fenco Disk Caliper (L) 84.99 64.99
Fenco Disk Caliper (R) 84.99 64.99
Wagner Rotor 86.98 66.98
Wagner Rotor 86.98 66.98

Amazon has the same rotors for $38 each/shipped (I have Prime - I don't know how much they are without Prime)

Just FYI

I love Prime. I'm a Prime member and yes, free fast shipping is the way to go. You can also purchase steel-braided brake lines on Amazon, whereas you cannot through Advance. Good call Scott.

I am a prime member and i didn't even think to check the prices on Amazon. That saves another 57.96 off the price for a total of 257.97

Thats a small price to pay for decent brakes!! Thanks for all the input guys

Akebono makes multiple brake pads that fit

there are 2 ultra premium models, the ASP976 and ACT976

can any provide info on the difference? I read in BFAD's brake thread that he used the ASP's but can't find any info on the differences.

I believe ASP976 is the newer model of their ACT976. Akebono may have had to change their production line around or maybe just their inventory list. However the case, there aren't any differences between the two, or as stated on any info/spec sheet I've looked at.

Can anyone comment on how much the Tundra brakes actually improve braking? Is it super dramatic?

HA! Well, you really notice it when your lifted. But trust me, its actually worth about $500 to me. I take that back, its priceless. When I would slam on my brakes with my factory brakes, the brakes would shudder and I would come to a stop, but nothing crazy. And it took awhile to stop. My rotors and pads were also somewhat new.

Then, I went with the 13WL upgrade, and not the 199mm upgrade. Right as I finished, I brought my truck up to around 25mph and slammed on the brakes. My girlfriend and friend were watching me and busting out laughing when i stopped. They said it almost looked like I was going to do a stoppie. The rear end lifted up real high and I stopped on a dime.

I took my truck up the mountains a few months ago and it made me to want to upgrade to the 13WL's. I saw a real need for them when I couldn't take slow approaches on narrow turns on the mountain. The factory brakes are plain scary and I didn't want that feeling anymore. Now, I haven't hit the mountains, but I can be damn sure it won't do that to me again.

The way the pedal sinks into the floor is somewhat identical to the factory brakes, but when you need them, the 231mm's perform so much better than the factory's. I can only say this job can't hurt you. And you will certainly be pleased with the outcome. It's ultimately a safety factor, and I feel much, much safer.

Also, in terms of longevity, the 231mm's on bigger tires and lifted 4Runners help prevent from warping rotors left and right, no pun intended.

I've seen this mentioned about the TBU - that because the caliper requires more fluid to puch the piston, the pedal can feel a little soft until it reaches the grab point. I'm woefully ignorant about auto mechanics but, when I did a brake swap/upgrade on my motorcycle, I switched to a larger master cylinder to compensate for the increased brake piston size and increase the feel on the brake lever. Is it possible to do something similar with the 4runner? I.e. - could we swap components with the Tundra to compensate for the increased volume needed to actuate the 231mm brakes?

Give RockAuto Parts Catalog a looksee. They usually save me 50% over local stores.

Be careful when bleeding the brakes. If you stroke the master too far, the corrosion on the piston can ruin the seals in the master cylinder and cause the pedal to go further than it should. In other words, don't stab the brake pedal all the way to the floor on older vehicles.
