Chances are that mechanic who quoted you the first time doesn't even do the differential service. A lot of shops aren't equipped with the skills or tools. I asked around to have my limited-slip differential installed and they all said they contract out the differential rebuild. You were smart in asking around for a place that actually does the work, it's much cheaper that way.

That's a great idea to get your hands dirty and see how much you can do on your own, you'll save a ton of money that way. Plus if anything ever does go REALLY wrong, just have it towed to a shop and they will fix it. Just not that first shop you brought it to. If you can change the diff oil, change the spark plugs and wires, change the fluids (engine oil, transmission fluid and coolant) you'll be WAY ahead. Timing belt can be done but I'd ask for a mechanically inclined friend to help you because there are some things that can go wrong with that job if not done right. I agree with the other post about just ignoring it. If the belt ever does break, which is extremely rare by the way, you won't hurt a thing. It just won't drive lol.

Thats pretty huge to learn about the timing belt. It always seems like shops claim it needs to be done or you're screwed, but its like the most expensive regular repair.

I did take a look at the valve cover gaskets after they were mentioned and they were pretty coated in oil. So hoping that a quick clean and tighten will solve that but well see. Posting some of the leakage in the below link.

Yeah honestly I've been wanting to get onto the next level of repair after fluids, brakes and filters that I've done. I wasnt thinking it would be on this rig because we wanted it to be a bit more ready, but no time like the present! Also so much good help and encouragement here that I'm feeling pumped

I'm late to the party but just seeing they want $500 for a valve cover gasket job that's highway robbery and the exact reason I do all my work myself. I'll be doing my VC gaskets soon as I get the parts and even if I did take it to a shop I'd never pay that much! The gasket kit for both VCs and all seals and everything you need to replace is less than $20.

Yeah definitely not heading back to that shop. Going to call around and get some quotes on that fix as well in case my tightening of the bolts doesnt solve the leaking.

It is called split loom, because it comes like that. The split/crack is how you get the wires inside of it. That's exactly how it is supposed to look.

Honestly, that sounds like a lot of repairs for someone that is admittedly not mechanically inclined. Those fixes may be needed to get the 4Runner tip-top, but it is obviously still running now. How does the frame look? You should definitely confirm it is rust-free before the purchase. Minor surface rust is fine, but scale and/or holes would make me walk away.

front sway bar stuff is super easy, napa sell both the brackets with bushings for $49, those bolts are 18lbs. Make sure you rotate tighetning them down, one then the other so the bracket sits perfect and doesnt brake again.

pretty simple job, and can replace endlinks bushings while you are in there, energy suspension has the good red urethane ones.
