What does this connector go to?

Hello all. I have a 1999 T4R SR5 3.4L 4X4. My vehicle was recently stolen and I just got it back. Now I am going through it and assessing the damage as well as looking into ways to prevent this in the future. I was looking into and researching online about the factory security system, as something as simple as the horn honking could have prevented this theft.

Shortly after buying the vehicle back in 2014, I bought a keyfob to lock and unlock the doors. After programming this, the "Toyota Security" device on the left side of the steering wheel would flash when it was locked with the fob. The light does not flash when locking with the door button. I tested the security system back then, and if I rolled the window down and locked the car with the fob, reaching in and opening the door would cause the alarm to go off. I have not tested this since then.

I read a few threads on here about the factory alarm system and everything I read said there should be a box located under the driver's seat or behind the dash that controls the security. I looked under the seat and did not see the box, so I looked under/behind the dash. While I was investigating under the dash, I found this connector that may or may nor be factory; I am leaning towards not factory, as it looks like it was spliced in near the interior fuse box. Actually, as I type this, I am looking at the pictures, the only wires that are spliced in do not go into the connector.

It is a flat, 14-pin connector that has a sticker on it that reads "KEEP THIS SIDE UP" and HWAXE01B 4". I googled this last bit and came up empty-handed.

Here's a link to the pictures, as the ones I have are too large to upload. (seriously, the max size for a jpg upload is 136.7 KB?)

Does anyone have any ideas about what this is supposed to be connected to?

You can link images here directly from Imgur, like this:

That doesn't look OEM for sure. Also, that box there zip tied with the white cable ties doesn't look OEM to me, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

The wires in this image:

Are likely the lock and unlock signal wires.

Guessing you have a previously installed alarm that has been removed...

Good to know about linking images! I don't post much on here because I can usually find the answers on here I need without posting. Yeah, after looking at the pictures while I was making this thread, I noticed that box and I plan to investigate this.

But those wires that are spliced are disconnected at the other end (unknown connector end) and my key fob still works...

That looks like leftovers from an old removed aftermarket system. The OEM remote does not need any extra wires (on the '99-'02 years) - it is all controlled via communication between the back door ECU and body ECU (inside the fuse box in your pictures). I do not know what extra stuff is installed when the 'extra' OEM security stuff is installed.

This is what I am beginning to think. I'm installing all new locks and ignition soon so I'll have the back hatch open and Ill look for the ECU while I'm in there. Do you have any information or pictures as to where it is in there or is it obvious?

Not sure if this helps but it seems as though most, if not all, security systems were dealer added options (as were running boards on some 4Runners for some odd reason). I've encountered three different systems installed so far and all utilized the red light on the dash... I wish I knew more about them. I just know some of the installs were absolutely terrible.
